Thats not a bad price, mind you it is a simple device. I was thinking of buying one to shove in the boot just in case.

Pump will be here Thursday, anyone know if I need any special tools to change this? I did a search but came up with nothing.

I also checked my Mercedes DVD/ROM and they mentioned a counter-tensioning tool for pump pulley-do I need this? or can I use an alternative to get this pulley off?

Dauber,

I had a similiar situation. If I didnt misread, you just replaced the AUX fans. I had an issue where they were wired incorrectly. Evidently according to Alldata and MB DVD, there was a change in wiring during the 96-97 model year. With them running make sure they are pushing air through radiator toward engine. When I installed mine they were drawing the air out from engine thus counteracting the engine fan. It was a simple change in the plug to reverse the wires, took about 5 min. Just a thought.

Also, with the cooling system operating properly, that engine shouldn't run too warm. Mine rarely reaches 90 celcius.... Most I recall while watching the digital readout on my climate control cluster was 92, while idling on a hot day...

I hope there won't be any head gasket issue(s). Keep us informed....

Thats for the tip E300-The fans are running clockwise when facing the car, and I do not feel the air pushing against me-so I think they are fine.
I think I am on the right track from what everyone here has said on this thead. I just don't want to start on this and find out I need some special tool to complete the job.

Easiest way to tell which way the air is blowing is with a sheet of A4 paper held close to the blades. It'll either be blown or sucked depending which way the fan is turning.

Well I just got done changing the water pump and T-stat- that was a nice labor intensive job! Got everything together and took for a test drive. Car still gets very hot, very quickly-!@#@$
I just ordered a new radiator, so the problem continues. At least did some preventative work with the new pump.

"work was done at the dealership, except for the last job-the head gaskets."

Has this car ever run correctly during your ownership? Who did the head gasket job? Was it done? Is the cooling system building pressure really fast?

Sounds like it may be time to start thinking about yanking the head.

I have the work order that the head gasket was done at an indy in Sacramento about 3,400 ago. The car ran correctly for the 3,00 miles I have owned it so I doubt is the head gasket. Full power, runs great, no smoke, no steam comming from the engine.

What I did not put in my last post is that the lower radiator hose was cool and the uppper hose was hot after the temp was up today to about 115C
that is why I ordered the radiator.
At least I hope it is the radiator hatterasguy- I mean what kind of things could I check to see if it is the head gasket? The car has never leaked a drop of any kind of fluid also.

Hmm send a sample of the oil out to Blackstone, and see if coolant shows up.

Its possible they head could have had a crack, and since they were selling the car they welded the crack. Welded heads don't have a good track record.

The fact that the lower radiator hose was cool indicates to me that the radiator is flowing coolant. How much is the queston.

Let the car sit over night, in the morning can you pinch the upper radiator hose with two fingers? It should be super soft.

Its been sitting for 4 hours now and I can squeeze it with 2 finger very easy. What does this prove?

I used one of those infer red temperature guns on the hose when I shut the car off the upper hose was like 190'F and the lower hose was 100F with an outside temp of 90F

I am really crossing my fingers at this point. I do not know of a way to test it myself, so I just ordered a new one. I am going to pull it out tommorow and see if I can get some flow out of it with a hose.-not sure that will tell me anything. I know that shops open them up and repair them. thanks for the replies.
Wife has been without her car for 2 weeks now and is calling it a lemon now-I cant win! she is just mad she has to drive the Jetta for now.
