Yep thats what I started to think when he first mentioned that. According to the OP the car was dealer serviced except for that last repair.

Another Update!

well I was out of commission for a little while and I am recovered now so back to the car. Here is what is going on now.

1. My new electric fans were running backwards, even though the old ones were running the right direction. Switched the connectors and it is running the right way now.

2. Ran Citric acid flush for about 100 miles without Tstat and drained it, rust colored water everywhere.

3. Replaced Tstat, put new Zertec G in, new fan clutch installed.

Gave it a good test in stop and go traffic-outside temp 95 F.
after many miles it climbed to about 98C but never went over that mark. It would cool down to the high 80's on the freeway. Back in stop and go it would get as high as 98C and never go higher. I got home let it idle for 15 minutes it slowly went down to around 95C and stayed there. The whole time the A/C was on max. Is this the running temp for this car in heat with the A/C on? I still feel its running a little hot.

That sounds good to me.

I'm in the east bay area so can also cet hot. Mine reacts about the same in high 90's to low 100 degree days Runs at 85ish on the freeway, after exiting into stop and go traffic the temp rises to 95C and the aux fan comes on. Never gets above 98C or thereabouts.

I think you've got it licked.

Sounds like you finally got it taken care of! Congrats! Now go put some miles on it, she's a little low for her age :-)

I was starting to go mad! Thanks for reassuring me about the temps! And thanks to all that helped in this long ordeal.

Yippie-Time to put the gas hog dodge ram back in the garage!

I have a trip to San Fran this week so maybe I will give it a good test instead of flying

Glad to hear you have it resolved. Yeah those damn fans got me too, that was my first guess at what your problem was. Mine runs about the same temp as yours in stop and go, never gets to 100 but gets close

backwards

Congratulations!

How noticable were the backwards fans? I tried the paper test and it seemed the right side would not blow the paper away (wasn't sucking it tight either) but the left (passenger side fan) did not suck the paper against the fan grills (hood popped open and up). Fans are brand new installed by my indy.

thanks

I'm hitting 112 in stopped traffic, but the odd thing is it takes a few miles of 40 mph + driving to drop my temp down. AC running on a 85F day driving at 75-80 mph I run around 90C, but a few minutes after hitting congestion my temp starts to climb up to 110 and the fans engaging don't fix the issue.

I need to spray my radiator out as well...could be loaded up with bugs and debris...but I can'tmagine that much.

Citric acid wash sounds good too!

Made some biodiesel but the process scares me - methanol fumes are not your friend! Need to do this outside.

Been watching this thread for awhile. Glad you got it all worked out. I do want to mention, I had problems with a lower hose colapsing on occasion. It got really week and whenever alot of volume what sent through it, it collapse some, restricting the flow. Just a thought. Be sure your hoses are in good shape.

190E-

The fans were actually hard to tell if running the wrong way, I know this sounds silly but unless you saw the direction the original ones were running the paper to the front fans is not the good test. After I installed the new fans I put a sheet of paper against the fans when they were running also-it would hold the paper against the fan, but not really suck it in. The problem is the way the electric fans are pitched-- when the are running backwards they don't do much of anything-sucking or blowing. When the old electric fans were trying to run they were turning clockwise while looking at them from the front of the car. My new fans were turning counter clockwise. I realized this after I started the car and watched and waited for the car to heat up and the fans to kick in. After I reversed the connection plugs I put another sheet of paper to the fans and it sucked it in and cut it in half! One problem solved!
The reason this car was heating up so fast was that I had electric fans running the wrong way, the fan clutch not working correctly. I had no air movement at all most of the time. This is why I thought it was the head gasket. Well that and the recent work done replacing the head gasket.

I know you can turn your fans on manually on the climate control or just even when the a/c is on they will come quick but I did not have a helper to do this while I watched.

Good point about the hoses I did replace them while I was doing all the other work, forgot to mention that.

Everything is running good now, I am going to take it on a 150 mile trip tomorrow for the final test, then the wife gets it back. 101F today and it held good at 96C in stop and go.

Was the replacement fan you bought aftermarket or MB OE?

I have heard that some aftermarket fans came wired wrong and run backwards but never heard of an MB fan doing this FWIW. I replaced mine too back in '05 when I found it was dead (I did use OE). The only thing I ever noticed after changing it was that the A/C cooled better in stop and go traffic. I think the engine fan clutch engages less too but it always cooled the engine off fine without the aux fan running. Running backwards would tend to be even worse than not running so I guess that is certainly not what you would want happening up there. Glad you fixed it.

I don't think mine has ever gotten all the way to that mark that we assume is 100C (the mark above 80). The closest I have come is about 1 needle width from it...probably 95-98C or so and that is in stop and go traffic. On the highway the temp will hover around 85C on the hottest days with A/C on (yesterday it was 100F here so I watched it).

Depending on the Fans that you bought, most usually have a directional rotation arrow on the front, indicating which way the should be turning

Me too - Counterclockwise!

My Indy popped the fans in recently and I noticed my car running hotter in stop and go traffic with no releif when I heard the fans engage. I went outside, hit the auto buttons and watched the fans..spinning to fast to tell, so I put my thumb on the center spindle and they were definitely spinning counter clockwise. I switched the polarity and then they were going clockwise. I'll report back tomorrow as to engine temps in stop and go.

It's going to be ~95F today...good testing grounds.

thanks

Let me know if that worked out for you.

I bought the ACM brand electric fan, the same part number as listed on this web site's parts page. I assume that is the OEM.
I also checked for the arrows for the direction of the fans after reading pbreku's post. There is litte arrows on the nuts in the center of each fan and the funny thing is they are pointing COUNTER CLOCKWISE!? I do not know what that is all about but it sure is sucking air in running clockwise. I stuck a piece of cardboard up to it and it held really tight.

I am almost tempted to pull the fan assembly out just to make sure I feel the air pushing in the right direction. But then again it is cooling right now so I may not want to mess with it.

I think I'm good - thanks

Driving conditions 94F and really humid (AC set to 68)
drove ~ 45 miles averaging 75 mph and engine temp hovered around 91
stop and go never went above 97
stopped at the grocery store, temp was 97 going in, got back in after 10 min
temp was 100. Started moving and temp went down to 96 very quickly, then to 93 and once I was on the highway back to 91. Got home 25 miles later stop and go never exceeded 96. Circled my parking lot 4 times (never above 10 mph) and temp stayed at 97.

I think I'm good. I'll spray my radiator to clean it out and then do a flush (it's been 60K miles since last flush).

Thanks so much! I love the forums!

thats good news! I am suprised these engines run so hot. I know the weather is a contributing factor but I was expecting it to run around 90C on a hot day not 100C in stop and go. This seems to be the norm from what everone is posting for this model so I will stop worrying about it.
