Talking I got my 1985 300TDT last night!

Hello everyone. I left yesterday morning at 10:30am from PA with my brother to pick up the car in east Long Island, NY. The PO was a cool guy who is very familiar with working on the diesel MB. We got to his house around 3:00pm and checked everything out. He gave me some insights and sent us on our way around 5:00pm. 30 minutes on the road it started raining. It got progressively worse the whole ride home. It rained so hard I couldn't drive faster than 45 mph because I couldn't see. The car was great, handled and ran fine, no leaks. It was a stressful drive because of the other motorists on the road trying to pass me and cutting me off in the process.
I think everyone was trying to be the lead car so they didn't have to deal with the spray from other cars. ANYWAY, I got home safely at 11:00pm.
12 1/2 hours round trip. I am glad that part is over. I went out to see the car again this morning with my wife. I think the wagon is winning her over.
She thinks it is beautiful. Today I take care of the transfers and insurance, etc. I will post pics as soon as I can.

Nice, chad! Sounds like you're off to a good start after a 12.5 hr. shakedown

I haven't decided if it's a positive or negative that the Mrs. doesn't hold my TD in the same regard. Granted I've got a few bugs to work out that might smooth things over for her a bit. Although it will still probably be too noisy and slow

I'd like to get her into a nice 124 TD though. That would probably be an easier transition for her.

Anyway, congrats on the new TD. Drive & enjoy!

So give us the scoop on your new buggy. What's the mileage? How is the rear suspension? How much did you pay for it? Etc Etc.

Nice rims, you got lucky finding a car that already had those.

Sweet ride. Nice find. I too dig the rims. Seems like the only TD's I see that have tinted windows are the red ones like that. They look good. Welcome to the 123 wagon club.

I took mine on a 300 mile trip the first day I got mine. It's gave me a good idea of how it would run. It was basically problem free, although the odometer started sticking, and the driver's seat was shot, and killed my back. But other than that it was a great first drive.

Here are some Pictures from Home

Sorry to the purists for the wheels. I think they look good and the AMG penta wheels in the earlier pic didn't come with the car. I do have the original bundts but need to clean them up. I got this wagon for $2600.

I then cleaned everything up and fixed some rust on the rear left floor and the bottoms of the doors. At that time I changed the door seals and sealed the other windows. No leaks anymore and the doors close tighter. I lubed the sunroof, changed the speedo, silver taped the cluster tunnels and jumped the dimmer for brighter dash lights, put in a rear seatbelt retractor, replaced the shifter link bushings and clip, and upgraded the diesel primer pump.

I still have to diagnose a vacuum leak effecting the door locks and finish putting the rear right door back together since I fixed the power window by cleaning the switches. It was apart when I bought the car. I still have the SLS hose to replace, but I think I am going to have the Mechanic do that when I get it inspected this week. I don't want to get the fluid all over which I am sure I would do. The garage floor is already getting a nice spot for some kitty litter.

Other than that it runs great, smokes very little and is very cool to drive …even though the climate control system has a leak. I will get to that when I have some time to heal financially.

I found some very helpful tips on this forum and thank everyone who shares their experience with the other members. I am new to diesels and what I found here has helped me gain a faster/better understanding of what to do with my old Mercedes.

Thanks and hope these pictures are OK.

interior is pretty good

sunroof is manual

nice jack holes

I am getting 250 and 500 grill badges soon.

Still have to replace the SLS hose.
