re:I've been trying to get info on a Jeep /MB diesel swap

I can understand about a 1989 4.0 liter being a great engine. My '74 323 (3.8) can barely wheeze out 100 hp (1bbl carb, point ignition, etc) so for me the 120 hp in the 617 would be a bonus . I was just wondering if somebody had documented such an installation with such tasks as plumbing the fuel lines, getting the vacuum system to interface with the Jeep and how to make those adapter plates.

Guess I will just have to keep wishing....

I have pics of the mounting plate/addapter. The motor mounts are my creation and I have some pics of them too. The tourque converter had the flex plate mounted to it with the mercedes bolt things welded to the jeep TQ. It seemed pretty straight forward. wiring was just glow plugs and alt. not computer.

Love it.

Unfortunately for me, sold my YJ the 5th of May, and just got an extra 300sd parts car with engine and tranny two weeks ago.

Thumbs up

Nice! I'm right in the middle of swapping a 616 into my M38a1. Jims Rover was a partial inspiration for the project. In fact it's going to have a few of his conversion parts on it.

Thanks Harry,

I have got some strange looks from people who see the logo, I think they just think I'm wishing my Jeep was a Mercedes. I have the best part of the Mercedes replacing the worst part of the Jeep. 617/and 4.2 carburated 6cyl. Thanks for the vote.... Jon

(Not scary at all) I feel comfortable to go 70, It just doesn't like to because of rpm's.
Sorry for the confusion, I know someone did a Wrangler conversion but they were just sticking with RWD (didn't bother with the transfer case) since it wasn't ever going offroad and I couldn't remember who.

I haven't heard of anyone else that has made the conversion on a Wrangler. I did talk to a guy that converted a Cherokee with the 617 motor. Mine is running the stock Jeep running gear.

Do you have any more information on the Cherokee XJ swap... mine's a 2wd and I'll be using the 617 and 722 out of a 300SD... I have the Cherokee drivetrain out and I will be test fitting the Mercedes drivetrain this weekend... I am a little worried about the clearance problems with the front steer jeep suspension and front sump Mercedes engine. I have made up my mind that it will fit... I am just worried about the extra time involved if I have to "rearrange" the suspension on the jeep. Any information on this swap will be helpful. Thanks,

Talking RE: Your swap

The guy I talked to used the stock jeep running gear with the 5spd trany. I put mine in and when I mounted the motor I lifted it about 1 1/2 inches.... Just a guess... I made the mount bracket and used a hydraulic motor mount that I picked from the catalog at Pep Boys. The motor mount had a bolt sticking out of both ends for simplicity. I'll look for the guys e-mail and I will post it if I find it. Jon

Good luck on your swap

You know, after working out how to shove a 302 V-8 into a 95 Ranger, this thread just gave me the idea of putting a 617 non-turbo into the ranger instead!!!

Wonder if anyone has done that?

oh, you got my vote as well, good job
