Climate Control Seems Wierd?

I think there may be something wrong with my climate control control unit. I went through a sort of informal test this morning, and I think it has issues. Heres what I did:
Started car with ACC set to off.
Set temperature wheel to min
Set to EC mode
Set fan to high
nothing. Fan doesn't kick on, nothing.

Set to defrost
Fan kicks on pretty high and heat blows out
Set to EC
Fan goes down a notch and heat seems to be not quite as hot... might have taken more time to cool down

What's going on here?
Also, I recently replaced a changeover valve and have the halfway defrost and footwell pods disconnected (the lines are plugged) because the diaphragms are bad. With that, there are no vacuum leaks in the ACC system and all changeover valves work. My fuses are fine and I wiggled number 8 to see if it was keeping the blower from coming on in EC (then I tried defrost and found the fuse was fine).
The blower was also recently replaced.

What's going on here? Anyone have a way I could test it to get more usable results?

One of the relays in the CCU has failed.

What? Where?

Where would the CCU relays be and how could I test them?

I didn't see where you listed what type of car you have. I have W123 - 300D and it was pretty common for them to have problems with the climate control module. This is the part with all the push buttons and the temperature control on the dash. It appears they suffer from a lot of bad connection from cold solder joints or micro cracking in the board traces.

I had the same exact problem as you described. Sometimes it would work and then it wouldn't and in a few days it would work again. I eventually went to a local salvage yard and bought a controller out of a junked W123. I haven't had any problems since then. You could also try removing your old controller and going over every solder joint. They can also be bought reconditioned on-line for a hefty price.

This is half bump and half me wondering what to do.

Where would relays for this be and is there any way to test them?
If it's the push button unit solder problem, I assume I basically disconnect it, pull it out, take out the screws and disassemble it, and look for failed/bad looking solders?
Is there anything that is generally the problem in these units?

I had similar problems, on the '82. I pulled the CCU, resoldered what I saw to be a problem, no change. Are the relays inside the unit?

I seem to be encountering the problem where I can't get the back of the fan buttons off in order to get the unit completely apart.
I have the temp wheel off and the bottom off, but I can't get the fan buttons to come loose so I can take off the front and access the entire circuit board.
What's the trick here?

Okay, the trick to getting the fan buttons off so you can take off the white piece on that side is to pull the auto button completely out of the unit. There is an obvious white tab that you pull up to let it out.

Now I'm down to the front buttons... I'll keep going at it, but is there something I should know here?

Looking around, it seems that my issue of the fan not kicking on unless I set it to defrost is caused by bad motor brushes?
I'm not familiar with exactly what those brushes are, but this is a brand new motor, and I don't quite see how this could happen...
Anyway, I got the push button unit apart. I'll post pics of the circuit board in a minute.

I don't see any bad solders there...

Thanks. Sounds like I'll need a different unit.
