Out to look at a car.. what to look for

Found an 82 SD with a supposedly rebuilt engine and bad transmission on craigslist. I mainly need a new body to swap my engine/tranny into since mine got hit . What are good spots to check for rust other than the jack points? Any easy way to tell if it really has a rebuilt engine and not just a cleaned one? Anything else to look at?

Why swap the motor if the motor runs? Just do the tranny.

Check everywhere for rust. Get under the car and poke at the frame and floorboards and all that. If you find any, look harder for more. Look under the doors, check the floors, jack holes as you said and all of that. The easiest way to detect a rebuilt motor is a reciept. Many times people will say rebuilt with no proof. Don't believe them unless it runs really well but don't let them use that to drive a price without proof.

Check the trunk for rust. Especially those two "storage" wells.

same on the 300SD as well, pull out the battery and tray, could have a
hole eaten through the fire wall. was on mine. was a fun fix it job.
also the sway bar mount under the battery could be eaten up by the
battery acid.
between the two fire walls, leaves and debris in there can cause a rust problem, and drainage.

the worst places on a 126 for rust are at the junction between the plastic thing under the back part of the rear fender behind the wheels. where it meets the metal fender likes to rust first in my experience. it is hard to repair too.

Front unibody rails, and guide rod mounts, and around the sway bar in the front wheel wells, those go up here in canada. And can be terminal
