I think that process tends to accelerate once it starts. Fewer junky cars on the road leads to less in the junkyards and fewer used parts. Also, the price of new parts on 25+ year old cars tends to climb. Due to the reduced availability of cheap/used parts the marginal cars tend to disappear faster. It won't be long until we start seeing lots of W124 beaters, there are already plenty of rough W201s around.

I remember when there were quite a few beat-up air-cooled 911s still running around. Now the only ones you will see are very nice, but you still find some 944 beaters. Even the majority of the old VW bugs on the road now are pretty nice (at least around here where they don't usually rust).

I just would like to know where the heck that guy even found that thing to begin with...

One of my 79 300CD's is in that condition, but it has much higher miles, (138k) and I did not buy it that way. It cost me a heck of a lot of money to make it that way. Just paint, and body alone, with no rust on the car from the start, cost $5600.oo. Interior work, cost me around $2500.oo, and mechanical work hit me for another $2900.oo or so, at the dealership. The body was nice as it was, and the interior was really nice from the start also. The car ran and drove pretty well, and just needed brake, and suspension work and some HVAC system work. Aside form that, the car was in nice shape. This was back in 2002 also.

Most of the money spent, went into labor/man hours, not so much materials, and parts.

Yeah I am starting to see even some W210 beaters! New Haven is full of Getto'd out W210's with chrome wheels, shiney paint, and nothing in the way of service since well ever. The owners simply can't afford to fix what breaks, so they drive them until they stop, and then thats that. Then someone gets them going and you see them driving around full of dents, smoking, etc, etc.

Most W124's are starting to look pretty rough, but nice ones can still be found with realitive ease.

I wouldn't be to worried about that car needing anything. As was said earlier, Mr Diesel is a nut, well not in such a bad way, but in his attention to detail. If you look at his other cars he doesn't even list a price until it is evaluated and everything(!) fixed. Maybe I can ask him if he'd be willing to show me the car, I'd like to see just what kind of condition it is in. I'd be willing to bet it looks and drives better than just about any 123 most members have seen or owned. There are only a handful I know of in better shape, but those don't move or are driven. If I see it I'll get back to you all.

30K per year. Currently at 115K.... So I figure it will be time to sell when it gets close to 300K.

OK, maybe I'll sell you mine when yours wears out, it should only have about 600K miles in 5 more years (no where near end of life).

Just kidding, I'm only 15 years away from 1000K miles, so it's not for sale.

It's funny how different people attach different values to the same object. I've got plenty of seat time and ownership ownership experience in the W123 chassis and I've never understood the near deity status it seems to enjoy on this, and other, sites. From my perspective the "I'm afraid of a check engine light" people are paying a heavy price for their insistence on simplicity. I keep wondering how many of the W123 fan club members have ever driven a nice example of a W124, W210 or a W202.

I have not used a W123 as a daily driver for over and decade and I wouldn't pay $2100 for ANY W123 chassis car but there are apparently lots of people that are willing to pony up 10X that amount on a really pristine example.

Different strokes for different folks I guess.

More W123s for the rest of us.

Seriously, I just don't like the new ones. It's not a matter of, "I'm afraid of a check engine light," the CEL is just a symbol of all the crap that I'm not interested in having in my cars (CEL, ABS, computer controls, air bags, etc.). IMHO, most of the new benz just look like hondas anyway, I simply don't find them very interesting to look at or to drive. If I was forced to drive a new car, I would probably just buy whatever ricer was the cheapest and throw it away every 5 years. I could probably save significant money/effort on maintenance by downgrading to a newer W124, W210, or W202, but I'm not really interested. Just a practical application of the KISS principle.

I agree with, "different strokes," you should drive whatever makes you happy, I even know some folks who are willing to pay over $5000 for some POS truck (I hate to even look at a truck, never mind spend money on one), and folks who pay $50000 for a vette.

You do realize that all this "crap" on more modern cars produces engines that in the case of my C230 Kompressor M111.975 has 75 extra HP, 50 extra lb/feet of torque and typically get 5-6 MORE mpg than your OM617 turbo engine?

I'm glad you are enjoying your W123 and I wish you many more years of enjoyment but for my edification... Have you ever driven a nice example of a W124, W210 or W202? They drive like a Honda? Really?

I actually said they look like (not drive like) hondas, I really dislike the looks of the new ones. I've driven a few newer benz; they're fine, they have plenty of power and are as nice as any other modern car (much nicer to drive than a honda), just not very interesting to me.

I understand your points - thanks for sharing your perspective with me.

I looked at the rest of the cars that the diesel guy was selling. I'd far rather have the brown 80 300SD. That's a real timewarp and one of my ultimate dream cars. Of course it's also 10K more than anybody on this forum would pay. Except me of course but then I have no money anyway. If I had the money I'd have bought it for sure.

It was my misquote.
