Rough costs on swappng out a transmission
I have never needed to do this, but there is a 300D up for sale in teh area with a dead transmission. What are the ROUGH costs of doing such a thing. I dont have the tools now knowledge of doing this. This would be a great car for my son!
Any input would be appreciated.

To have it done by someone with a rebuilt unit you are probably looking at $2K. That's $1200-$1300 for the unit and then labor assuming roughly 1 day for remove and install (that's assuming the mechanic is fast). A DIY'er should take around 1 day for remove, 1 day install unless you've done it before.
no special tools are need except for a transmission jack, 4 solid jack stands and probably a 6x6 block of wood to allow the jack to get the car up high enough to slide the transmission out. The cheapest standalone transmission jack from harbor freight is a POS. Get the next model up or the adapter tha goes on a standard hydraulic jack.

What year is the 300D and do you know exactly what is wrong (symptoms) with the transmission? My 300D transmission "needed replacement" when I got it. It turned out to be a broken plastic gear in the trans that cost about $2.00 and took about 30 min to replace. I also serviced the trans with filter and Mobil 1 Trans fluid and have been driving it every since. Best $1000 I ever spent.

Hah! JackG pulled something similar to a dead transmission. turns out it was a broken CV axle. Another cheap fix and he got the car for next to nothing.
