Removing starter, which wrench do I need?
 

I bought a starter for my 1980 240 D and proceeded to put it on today. Only problem is, I found out it needs a hex/allen head wrench, which I apparantly dont have. I have one that is almost big enough, but I imagine it needs to be a metric. So, can anyone tell me what size I need, within the next 30 minutes or so, that way I can have my son pick one up for me, before he leaves Wichita, Ks.?

10mm allen.

By the way get a piece of pipe 18" or so from the hardware store if you don't have one already. That was the only way I could enough leverage to remove the starter in my 240D. Those bolts are in there tight.

Im a farmer, I have plenty of junk stuff laying around, no need to go buy a pipe!:D Already used a short piece on the top bolt, as I had an allen wrench that was "almost" the right size(probably american) and I pried just a bit with some leverage and it turned easily. The bottom one, I knew I needed the correct metric size, and my son should be bringing me one home tonight, so I can complete the task in the morning.

COADMAN---- Ihaven`t worked on a 240, but must be similar to a
300D 617. I cut off a piece of the allen, about 1 1/2 - 2 inch long
and use a gear wrench and a 10mm long box wrench. have to hold the
allen in or it alls out, but works for me. pita to work on. I also apply
a little anti siez on the threads.

I recommend against using an Allen wrench that's "almost" the right size. Unless it's very very close to big enough, it can round out the socket if a lot of torque is needed. On my '80 300 TDs I use a cut-off piece of a 10 mm
Allen and a 10 mm socket with about two feet of extensions, and plenty of leverage. Reassemble with anti-seize. Steve
