Amen to that!
I'm in much the same position - I don't have a license yet (in Texas, we have learner's permits that you can get once you're 15), but I came to another forum and then here, and the car suddenly has 0 vacuum leakage, the A/C works, and it's much nicer to drive! This forum is full of good people who are willing to help, and most of what I've learned is just from browsing it and reading random threads. Some may say I have too much spare time but hey, I also have gone from knowing that fuel is compressed until it explodes to knowing how to do a compression check and what pressures I want to have.

this just happened to me!
Thanks for the (at times labarynthine) discussion of the problem. This JUST happened to me today, and now I have a pretty good idea where to start. I guess it doesn't help that after enlisting my dad in the diagnostic pondering, its the first thing he mentioned. So great to have found this thread.

Vacuum pump replacement.
I fitted a pump from a 84 300D Turbo to my 74 240D. The 84 300D pump is a piston type pump, a much better pump. Everything lines, the cam follower and all the bolt. My door locks never operated so fast.
The diaphram never seemed to like long high speed runs. I had to replace the diaphram twice. then clean up oil all over the place. The Gears
