123 trailer wiring
Has anybody wired a flat 4 trailer connector to an '82 300D ? I have the directional and running lights working but no brake lights. Is there a special wiring module for cars with the amber directionals? Seems , I've read somewhere that the foreign cars have a different system for the taillights.

yes, probably it is a problem. On the american autos the turn and brake are usually combined. The european system has a separate amber turn signal. I solved it on my small travel trailer and Saab tow vehicle many years ago by adding an amber utility light for the turns on the back of the trailer.
There may be an electronic gizmo which does it without all that bother Tom W

there is a "gizmo" that will do it for you, any trailer supply house or uhaul would have it in stock. tons of vehicles have this setup. personally, I would just use a 5 pin harness, and wire it myself with extra lights on the trailer.

The only factory hitches that Mercedes put on were in Europe and had a nine pin connector. I think pre 1981 needed a relay and a special emergency flasher switch and the later ones just needed the wiring harness.

Yes, any auto parts store should have the connector. Not much more expensive than a standard 4 pin connector. Used one on my 85TD this spring. It combines the amber turn signals and brake lights into the same bulbs on the trailer.

As was stated.....
Most Auto Perts Houses, Boat stores (Boat US, West Marine), and any trailer hitch place...even U-Haul stores have the item of interest.....
It's generally a little black plastic thingy....a little bigger than a match box.....and generally comes with some double sided stickey stuff to attach it in a hidden location...... I think it is basically a Wheatstone Bridge....Diode Bridge.....that prevents electrical feedback to the other circuit (brake light, turn signal).....encased in plastic..... SB

i just took the straight cables and soldered them to my brake connectors on the inside of the brake light. it worked like a charm for me.

I agree
I'm going to get the converter with the built in circuit protection , its a couple bucks more but worthy it in the long run.
