i made some macho dudes in expensive cars pretty angry with that car. it was no monster, but with the boost turned up plus the intercooler it would GO until the IC got heat soaked. all for the tidy sum of about $1,200.

An IDI common rail setup would be cool also and less work too. I like the computer controls sure there more complicated so you have more to break but the potential for power at the flip of a switch is amazing. we have a mill a lathe a welder and an 616 laying around maybe Ill start playing around with it worst it can do is not run and be a more expensive paper weigh. with the computer controlled setup you could turbo a 616 and not worry about fuel issues just have to figure out a way to oil spray the bottom of the pistons and make sure all the parts are strong enough to hold up

The ONLY way to make a 'common rail' setup work on the 617/603 would be to use the stock injectors with a high speed high pressure solenoid valve between the injector and the rail. There are some of these in the electronic rotary pumps I think. This system would give you all of the control of the common rail, but not quite all of the DI benefits (still IDI after all). The main benefit is being able to advance the timing as much as you need at high RPM while still being able to idle well/quietly (the IP advance mechanism already in the engine is mechanical and difficult to change/tune).
More power at the flip of a switch isn't going to be possible with a otherwise stock setup. The reason that the big trucks get such big power increases at the flip of a switch is because the high performance folks don't care about black smoke or emissions like the OEM does. Also, the big trucks already have large intercoolers, air filter, exhaust, etc. So they have plenty of cool excess air to burn the additional fuel. We have to get more COOL air into the 617 to get performance out of it. Going to a common rail system does not immediately provide that. You would need new pistons to turbo a 616. The pistons really can't handle it. Really. I don't care how you 'control the fuel' they can't handle the extra heat and combustion pressures. Dunno if you need a new block for the oil squirters.

Just the kinda Geek I wanna talk to....

It seems to me that an existing common rail system could be programmed to inject fuels of various viscosities....read that as WVO or SVO, or whatever else is available......taking into account the inherent properties of the alternative fuel, and the amount of fuel injected, and the timing of the fuel so as to provide efficient and complete/clean combustion..... SB Yup some of us out here are thinkin'.....

The limiting thing as far as different viscosities of fuel is concerned is probably the injectors. With all the different injection events that are possible in a single cycle I don't think the injectors would tolerate change all too much!

IDI needs relatively small pressures like 150bar, so maybe someone can make electronics in order to fire common rail injectors with Megasquirt?
Anyways, I dynoed my OM602 few weeks ago. That's 5 cylinder. Got only disapointing 295hp@5200rpm and 414Nm@4700rpm. I consider that as complete failure For a OM617.. Got to love that engine to make it 200hp screamer. Same amount of money you'll get 603 or 606. I also got to be crazy too by tuning 602 |

I don't think megasquirt would work at all. Gassers don't have to worry about precisely timed injection... I think they can just do a constant PWM. Not too up on gassers though (although megasquirt is very cool!) Thats double stock power right? It is certainly a good start Seriously though, fantastic job on that!

Double would be 240hp.

Honestly, it was triple, since originally OM602 2.9 is 95hp NA diesel

Gee, Can I hijack my own thread? Anyway, as for the programmer/chipset the guy who owns Golden Fuels [formally Greasal] is selling tuners for the Jeep Liberty CRD and I think a couple others where the program is tuned for wvo.... That said, I don't know how much I'd trust a guy who blew the motor in his Liberty from supposed "lack of maintenance". This isn't a guess, when he listed the Liberty on EBay he admitted it. Also, rumor has it that his system does not heat the oil well enough. - That is hearsay! Back on topic: I took the 300SD out for a drive tonight. The shift from 1st to 2nd was so stiff, if I had her floored she would chirp the tires. Will this hard shift hurt? If this is what I can expect in the condition she is in... Maybe getting her back to stock will be enough.... maybe.... C.
