Definately a car worth pursuing, for that money. 278k isn't too much mileage for that diesel. I think the W123 trunk triangle would drop right into it, but I am not sure if they use the same clip. Boardmonger would know.

With the long wheelbase W126 in black, if you get the car, you could get the diplomatic flagstaffs for the front fenders, put dieselreich flags on the fenders of leader's car. But black cars are harder to keep clean
and they get hotter in the sun.

Runaway from it if it's rusty. Check especially for water leaks, look for delamination (milky) at the corners of the back window, and know theythey soetimes leak into the trunk at the bottom of the rear window, and when the trunk rubber seals leak too. Sometimes there are leaks into the front passenger area too, watch out for them. Drains get clogged.

A good W123, W124 and W126 are great cars to have.

Different clip. I just shipped my last 126 clip away. If you get it and need one, let me know, I can find (know where) another is.

Buy it!! the 603 is a sooo much better engine and the LWD W126 is soooo much better then a W123 in terms of luxury and comfort.

As for the head, squeeze the upper radiator hose to test its pressure. Old trick not 100% accurate but will clear up some worry about the cracked head issue.

Check for the updated vacuum pump, if it doesnt have it youd better replace it.

and if i can think of anything else to check for ill let you know.

A Don must have black on black... you must be jealous I found one.

I had forgotten about the self destructing vacuum pump and the latest find that the updated ones might contain the same problem

at that mileage, be sure an TOTALLY clean the cooling system. degrease it, citric acid flush it, SERIOUSLY rinse flush it, and refill with the MB coolant.

Not to jump the gun here but from what I have learned I know that I will have to

1) citric acid flush and convert to correct coolant
2) replace the vacuum pump to the updated style if not already done
3) replace the tensioner if its going
4) new belt (it has a serpentine belt... err)
5) oil change
6) transmission fluid change
7) fuel filter change

among some of the things
