a/c compressor....

Hello folks....

I have 1980 300sd and the compressor is not engaging. It seem like the clutch for the a/c compressor is not working unless i give it a gentle wack with a hammer. The a/c clutch seem to work and it starts with a "whirrr" and the cool air flow out the vents. I've tried it with the engine off and then turn on the engine and the a/c and that never works. So i try it with the engine on and sometimes that works. Many can imagine, I hate sticking my arms across all those spinning fan blades, turning pullies, belts etc. I don't want to have a finger cut off or an arm mangled. How and where can I get the a/c compressor fixed? Is it possible to replace/fix the a/c clutch? Or does the entire compressor need to be fixed/replaced?.....

May just be the clutch gap is too wide. Should measure about the thichness of a credit card (snug).

If that is the problem, it is adjustable with special tools that most Autozone stores rent for free (hefty deposit required). It can be done with the compressor right in the car on the 126 (don't know on the 116); no disconnect at all, but you have to be a bit nimble.
