79-300CD compression...I'm bummed

I'm a little bummed...
I finished out of the intended maintenance and replacement projects as mentioned in another thread (valves, fuel filters, idle adjustment, diesel purge, oil change, etc) and it is running a little better. I did a diesel purge and it sounds better, but I am getting some leaking at the base of the injectors. It still idles rough and has some nailing. Oh, accelerator sticks a little.

THE BIG deal is that I did the informal compression test of covering the breather hose outlet. First, when I took off the breather hose, it smoked like a coal train! Then, when I covered the breather...it shut off the engine immediately! No five seconds or even 1.5 seconds!

Now, the guy told me that he thought that was the case and I bought it for $500 with a rust-free body, new tires, new starter, and a very good interior.

Are there any tricks I can try or just start looking for another engine?

Thanks, Don

I will post some pictures in the next few days.

I've been arguing with mine for the last week!!! I can't really help you as I am new to this MB game, but I will tell you one thing....

Don't give up!!! These engines seem to be pretty reliable and bullet proof, just keep trying different things until you figure out the problem.

Sorry I couldn't be more help

I'm kind of doing the same thing right now.

I'm buying the Harbor Freight compression tester and am readying myself to do a more formal investigation. Only then will I really know whats going on and can make informed decisions about what to do next.

I think youll need to at least take that step to be able to get more help from everyone whos so incredibly helpful and experienced here.

If car starts, well and runs pretty good you can increase the viscosity of the oil to a straight 40 to get rid of some of the blowby. I have to assume if you install the oil filler cap without closing it. Is there is so much blowby at idle it will blow the cap off. Try it.
You have to control or keep the blowby at a rate that will not shut the injection pump down from crankcase pressure. Thats how the engine shut down immediatly for you with your test. If oil pressure is good you can live with this for a long time. Is the blowby transfering a lot of oil residue to the air cleaner? Does sound like an engine thats getting tired though. Car was never on vegatable oil?

I have a compression tester I used on gas engines...will it work for diesels (stupid question, I'm sure)?

There is oil on the new air filter and I think the former owner may have used some VO...I'm not sure.

This motor is not a turbo, can I replace it with a turbo engine?

Thanks, Don
