has anybody noticed or tried this?
on my '85 300D, 123, with the regular P, R, N, D, S, L:

from dead stop; lever at S; accelerate from 1st gear until 2nd gear, then as soon as it hits the 2nd, put the lever back to L, and it will hold the 2nd gear no matter what, and will not downshift to 1st gear unless brakes to full dead stop again.

just a thought, if it has something to do with the "B" feature on 126s?

That's how it's supposed to work, but it's different from the "B" feature. As far as I know, the only cars that have the "B" feature are those that start in 2nd gear in normal driving and as has been said earlier the purpose of this feature is to start in or hold first gear.

I gave a complete description of the B function, in my earlier post. I learned about it from the owners manual. If you have such equipment you should also have the owners manual which explains its operation.

Don't have an owners manual. Don't even know what "S" stands for. Slope? Slow? Sport?

Here is the official explanation as outlined in the owner's manual for the 420, 560SEL and 560SEC:

"2"

Upshift to 2nd gear only. For
driving in mountainous regions.
Since transmission will not shift
up further, this gear selection
will make use of the engine's
braking power.

--------------------------------

"B"

In this position, the engine's
braking effect is utilized while
descending steep or lengthy
downgrades, especially with a
trailer. Use this position only be-
low 60 km/h (40 mph).
