Anyone have a 2.47 diff for my 84 300d 3.07?

I'm looking to swap out the diff in my 84 300d. Does anyone have a 2.47 diff that will work in my car?
Does anyone want to send my a private message that is familiar with this swap that I can email for more info?
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
-jon

You dont want one. Not unless you are running alot more than stock power. I have 2.88 and hill starts are painful.

Yes, very painful even with an automatic. Unless you do 99.5% highway travel it wouldn't be worth the hassle.

diff swap

Thanks for the replies. My car is running really fast and powerful. Atleast a 2.88 or 2.65?

respects, but totally disagree with you both..run the 2.47 and would never go back.
slow off the line 0-5mph..but with the alda tweak, accelerates briskly staying longer through the 1-2,
is great around town in 3rd, and downright ridiculous on the highway.

the 2.88 ('85) is probably optimal for the automatic (do not believe the 2.65 is a bolt on),
and do agree it would be too low a ratio for the manual turbo conversions (like winmutt and forced).
edit:you should trade diffs with winmutt. be perfect for the both of you.

overall, recommend it be a later mod..after wheel/suspension/engine/brake upgrades.
check out this thread.. holy 2.47 sleeper and pm any q?s cheers.

Thank You Rudolf

Yeh, My car is really quick right now. I could lose 15% power/torque and still be happy. I would love to put a 2.47 in my 84 300d. Possible Right? Has anyone done this already that can give me some advise?

Thanks again,

-jon

Thumbs up

Leave it in 3rd in town and use 4th for city only. I can't wait to 2.47:1 my SDL and the SD.

Also, all '85 and older W126 diffs will fit, as they have the 185mm ring gear from my memory. MB went to a 205 I think in '86.

I just stuck a 2.47 in my 1984 300TD from a 1983 380SE. I totally disagree with the assessment that you need more than stock power. I live in Vermont, a hilly place, and the car does just fine. You will be doing a lot of driving around in "S" under 55mph, but you can drop it down to "D" if you want to on the flats or downhill to try to save some fuel.. I think with stock power on some hills on the highway you might have to slow down to 55 and drop down into "S", but I haven't had it on the highway yet so I just can't tell for sure. I haven't had it in long enough to get an idea about fuel economy, but it does make the driving experience a LOT more enjoyable while cruising at 65-70 and above (read: quiet). Basically, you just follow the procedure for removing the diff as stated in the Haynes manual or whichever source you prefer, and then bolt the new one up. Its that simple. The 2.47 is physically larger than the 3.07 box but all the important parts (mounts, etc) are identical. Before you put it in, you will have to swap the input shaft from the 3.07 into the 2.47 which requires a 30mm deep well socket and a torque wrench. You also MUST make sure you get the axleshaft shims from the car that you pulled the 2.47 out of. They are washers that go between the axleshaft flange and the output bearing in the differential and you will need them because the ones in the 3.07 are not the correct thickness.

I put the 2.47 in my 1984 300SD and drove it for about a year before I sold it.

If you are doing the swap for better fuel economy, don't even waste your time. It's just not going to happen.

The 2.47 will make the car extremely quiet at highway speeds, when compared to the 3.07. The 2.47 will also not give you any noticeable increase in fuel economy, maybe 1 mpg. I have had no problem with power on my 300SD since installing the 2.47and have been through the Ozarks and Smokies several times with it and was always able to stay with traffic during those drives. I just looked at my records. I have put around 31,000 miles on this diff and would not go back to the 3.07.

As I understand it you are looking for a 1981-1984 380SE. Any later than this and it won't have the correct mounting apparatus. I'd suggest looking around for a Mercedes-Specific junkyard.

The years would be 1981-1985. Additionally, the 500SEL would also have the 2.47 diff.
