Alternator replacement 77 300d

I asked this question on another thread where I was diagnosing strange idiot light behavior, but I think it needs a thread by itself.

What's the story on replacement alternators? When I look it up on Fastlane, it shows a Bosch replacement with an internal regulator meaning that the external regulator has to be bypassed. Has anyone replaced the original (which I'm pretty sure has an external regulator) with one from Fastlane without? What's involved? Should I get the existing one rebuilt or look for a rebuilt model with an external regulator?

Unsure of '77's, have you seen a pic of the replacements on whatever site you're buying from? Can send pic of '82 alt. PM

Picture and info about the external/internal regulators was here, on 'Buy Parts'.

Looks like the external regulator design can be replaced with the internal regulator design and it has 10 additional amps output. I imagine any wiring changes to be made would be with the new alternator instructions. You could drop phil a line and ask to verify this. I suspect you just bypass the external regulator.
