Yes, the goal is to get the reservior as high as possible when adding coolant.

To comment on an earlier post, it wouldn't hurt to prefill the upper hose, either.......

i'm confused, i dont seem to be burning oil. oil level hasnt moved in the last week. i'm getting back pressure thru the water reservoir? no oil in the water. no water in the oil. the smoke i'm getting when it runs has a blue hue to it, mix with black at hard acceleration. is this consistent with a bad head?

You cannot see coolant in the oil until the crack gets very severe. You might have oil leaking into the combustion chambers, and, hence the blue hue from the exhaust.

There is a test for the coolant that can detect combustion by-products.

An oil analysis would also confirm Glycol in the coolant, if any.

If the level of coolant is dropping in the expansion tank, you've already got your answer..........although I'm quite sure that you're in the denial phase.............
