Why do you need to rebuild for a blown head gasket? Any machine shop should be able to see if the head is warped. You can if you run a straight edge along the surface. Beyond a certain point, you might not want the head if it is too warped.

Unless you can be absolutely positive that the "rebuilder" has significant experience with M/B diesel heads, I'd strongly advise against taking a flyer on a "good machine shop".
There's many stories on this forum of folks who went that way and, in the end, the job was not correct and the head had to be removed due to oil consumption issues. If you want a guarantee that the job is done correctly, ship the head to Metric Motors. Figure that the shipping cost of $120 ensures that you don't do the job twice. It's worth it. http://www.mercedesengines.net/ |

Shouldn't any machine shop be able to check the head for being flat? I would before I send it anywheres for anything. I'm not convinced that a blown head gasket necessitates a head rebuild. Now if there was a ton of miles or it was warped, you would be right. If he sends a head that MM cannot rebuild for whatever reason, he might be out the $400 core plus the shipping.

I cannot see the benefit of doing all the work required to change the head gasket and ignoring the valve and prechamber work if your intention is to keep the vehicle for another 100K miles. Sure, if the head was overheated badly, it certainly makes sense to check it for flatness and perform a pressure check locally, if this can be arranged. The head that came off the SD was found to be cracked by a local shop........before I realized that they were not capable of actually rebuilding it. |

head work
After considering the cost of head work my friend has decided to get another car. The car needs lots more than just head work. A/C, paint, interior, etc. I guess its a good parts car now.
