Nice, made me LOL. nope, sorry, no hood scoops and no carbon fiber either. just a creeping suspicion that air cleaner mounts should not be considered a consumable item. beta testing continues

You know.... I hope you don't have an IP failure or rear end trouble... Some folks here will say it was all caused by the "unauthorized" modification that isn't in the "official" MB bible... er... ahh... manual!
I'm all for getting more-cooler air to the tiny turbo. Eliminating the U-turn hose thing is a great start! - I love to hear the turbo spool up! My U-turn thing fell off the other day when I was making a run to the parts store. Because it meant that there was BARE turbo exposed I did a quick "push it back on" job in the parking lot. New gaskets are on order as we speak. What does the air box look like on the 300D that has the "shark gill" thing on the right front fender? Also, look at the air boxes on 94-98 Dodge Cummins. There may be some inspiration there. More air ... please? C.

K&N air filters work on the assumption that if it makes more noise, it's somehow more powerful. If you want the same experience of horsepower that one of those filters provides, make a hole in your exhaust.
It's not worth it, you kill the engine faster for no gain.

More air isn't going to do anything for your car. Even with the U-tube, the turbo already ingests more air than what's needed for combustion.

On a stock setup you are probably right. I found that Wix (I think they are OEM and NAPA oem) filters had plenty of flow and the Puralotor bogged at higher rpm. I also found that the muffler was a much greater overall constriction than no filter, cone filter, or stock setup could make a difference in. My only real complaint on the stock setup is the size of the filter housing and more importantly the space it uses.

OK, since you asked (but mostly because of the benzworld comparison, which I take considerable exception to!) 1. Its too big, it hampers access and maintance. 2. it snaps its own mounts w/ alarming regularity 3. It IS the heat shield for the turbo, it stays medium on top and gets hot as hell on the bottom... so much for cool intake air 4. it leaks, the stock setup was leaking in 2 places, and the PO was pretty darn good about PM. 5. its a poor design that forces a 180 degree direction change in airflow directly before the turbo inlet. 6. Its inefficient, air has to pass thru over 3 feet of 'plumbing' to get to the turbo... also the first tube is corrugated, which hampers airflow and increases (dis)turbulance 6. w/out it, the engine looks symmetrycal and beautiful 7. it was designed partially w/ noise suppression in mind.... and I don't give a damn about that. But reason number 2 was all that was necessary for me to make this modification.

You may want to make a thread for this.

Heres a pic of my setup. The oil separator is a modified Moroso catch can. The drain hose is rubber oil line lead down and clamped onto the nipple that the old metal drain line fit over. Note the use of zip-ties to hold the base of the oil separator and the AC hose off the K&N filter. I have been getting round 'tuit on better brackets for a year or more. The setup works. Intake is a ricer pipe, cut down with a bung welded on for the separator hose and a silicone reducer hose to attach it to the turbo.
I'm sure I'll hear plenty from the peanut gallery on why this is bad idea, etc. but I don't really give a crap what they think, its not they're car. I too got tired of the busted mounts, etc. RT

Don't bother, it's their cars, if they want to hack them up with silly modifications it's their business. We all know that the stock air filter works just fine if you bother to maintain your engine so it doesn't try to shake itself to bits. If someone want's to install some POS cone filter, it's up to them, as long as they never try to sell the car to me. If the car survives their ownership, the next owner will have to get rid of all that crap, a PITA but probably not fatal.

I love that people knock upgrading the intake modifications, especially when they have not tried it themselves. How is it going to destroy the engine any faster? What is more silicate gonna get in the engine? Ha! Maybe, but the amount is so minute that regualrly changing your oil at the scheduled interval totally negates this problem. Besides, the cone filter is oiled before installation anyway and can be cleaned for continual usage. The original filter setup is so goofy and inefficient it makes me sick. I cannot believe they would do that to these wonderful engines. They are too pretty to hide under that carberatoresque setup (and that is what it is- It was a way to cheaply recycle parts from older engine models like the N/A gassers to keep production profit at a maximum. That is why new cars have intake tubing that mirrors this setup - ie cone filter boxes, take a look in any 1999 or new car)
I have customized every single MBZ diesel with my intake systems and experienced- 1-Better Fuel Economy 2-Better throttle Response 3-Cleaner engine oil- I did a comparison after I changed it, the original Intake system caused tooth paste engine oil syndrome mainly because it was boiling the oil on its way back to the oil pan. 4-NO MORE OIL LEAKS- you think this system is bad, running your car on not enough oil is way worse. Oh and the check valve is not in need of replacement. When I was working out the kinks in my first system I found that if there is too much Positive Crankcase Pressure the dipstick tube will erupt oil. The fix for this problem was running a larger diameter tube from the valve cover to the intake, and allowing the crank case vent filter to breath a little better. The more crankcase gasses vented means the less stress on the internal enigine systems such as oiling and valve operation, the system will save your seals too. I can proudly say I have just sold the my 2nd 300sd and the 2nd fastest 300sd in Texas, thanks to my intake and vacuum mods. No propane or intercooler on that one but give me a little time with my current 85 and we shall see...
