I was only gonna change the air cleaner mounts...

DISCLAIMER!!! This car is not my DD, I respect the german engineering, I understand hot air in the intake is not a good thing, I have read available information regarding K&N type filters, this is a beta test version only.

I had the cushions and the new cups, I sarted disassemblying, and saw what a sorry setup I was about to replace, and before I knew it, I had the filter canister off and was hacking out the oil seperator cannister w/ a sawzall and a grinder...

heres what was left...

heres the mount in situ

and here a possible intake...

I intend to build an airbox behind the headlight, and modify the existing headlight mounted intake to feed it.

Not a good idea, you'll gain no performance, and will only wear out the engine faster.

The stock setup was better....

Your filter is way too small.

In threads like this I always wonder: "What is it that is so bad about the stock air cleaner setup?"

You did come up with a unique setup for the oil separator......

Performance considerations are secondary, I was primarily interested in getting rid of the leaky, rattling airbox... judging from the welding some PO did on the mounting 'cups' this was far from the first time all 3 mounts had broken.

I cant believe how much it opens op the engine compartment, this is how the engine is spozda look. But I need to make some heat shields for the turbo, now that the airbox isn't there acting as a heat sink.

I have not settled on a filter element yet, the cone in the picture is a place to start.

EDIT: I have 3 air cleaner mounting cups and rubber bushings FOR SALE!!

Thanks everyone for your comments.

Things I have learned so far....

an "old faithful" type eruption of oil up thru the dipstick tube can be accomplished by blocking the vent on top of the valve cover on a runnning engine.

the oil seperator can leaks gasses around the top flap and need to be welded/glued shut.

To tuck the airfilter behind the headlight, you need a 90 degree intake tube.

That electric coolant pump might hafto be relocated an inch or 2.

Listening to your turbo spool for the 1st time (even in a deserted parking lot) is sweet

Your setup will work a lot better if you turn the new intake pipe to angle UPWARDS.

You'll need to drill a hole through the hood. Then mount the K&N above the hood, inside a big hood scoop. Would look very custom if you just bent sheet metal for the hood scoop.

den you fly.
