Sunroof Motor.
Rebuilding/replacing the motor as a last resort, is there anything else I can do to free a stuck sunroof? it got slower and slower then quit when I tried to open it one time.
is it okay for penetrating oils to be inside the motor case?

Three things can cause the sunroof to slow down....
And out of the three, the motor/gearbox is the least likely suspect.
Most likely is the 'roof needs to greased with that special high dollar MB paste. This is the stuff to use, because ordinary stuff, even lubriplate, will tend to collect dirt and cause problems down the road. Next is the teleflex cable and housing. besides getting gunked up, they can kink and cause a significant drag. Lastly is the motor and gearbox, but I think this is a small chance. Motor/GB failure is usually sudden and complete. Your failure mode makes me think it's 1 or 2 above. Also, the gearbox has a clutch that may be adjusted, As the system gains resistance, the clutch can start to slip. Check in your trunk on the left side by the hinge, and listen for the motor. If it's spinning freely, then the clutch is slipping, likely because of significant resistance in the mechanism. Jim

I have been wondering about that special sunroof rail grease for quite awhile. Have decided it is probably a very light silicone grease. Anyone have another ideal? Another problem if so where can you buy a small quantity?
A general cleanup including cleaning and lubrication of the activation cable, tracks, sliders, and cable housing is way overdue on a lot of these older cars. Should be done to ease the finding of any potential trouble if not obvious. There is a good chance it was the trouble in most cases. That part of the repair can also just be considered overdue maintenance. Just time consuming rather than dollars as well. It has to extend the motor assembley life as well to some degree. Nothing like a smooth transition of the sunroof from one end to the other as well. Last edited by barry123400; 06-19-2007 at 09:01 AM. |

UPDATE:
Cleaned all the tracks and shoes. I used a light grease/oil for lube for now with sunroof panel out of car motor doesn't move cable I can rotate the motor with the nut and the slider moves fairly freely, with expected gear reduction resistance. When I opened the sunroof to remove it, I bacled it up by hand but then the motor worked for a few moments then stopped and never moved again. cable or motor brushes? how easy is the motor to remove, and how do I lube the cable?
