79 TD AWESOME brakes! I love MB!!!

ok, I'm doing about 50 on a semi rural road heading home, and an ID10T starts to pull out just as I get to their street. my instant reflexes slam on the brakes and the "TIRE NOISE" alerts the moron I am pretty close to him/her. and she stops pulling out. I easily maneuver around the moron and continue on my way home. I hope they had to change their shorts! anybody out there have similar wonderful design thanks to MB stories? I mean how many cars in 79 had four wheel disc brakes with multi-piston calipers on all 4 ? especially a WAGON!
If I had ABS I probably would have hit the car, cause they wouldn't have heard me. ( I never hit the horn when I am in avoidance mode)

busy week

I just about ran into a cow on the freeway last night at about 10:30. Saw the white and brown at the last minute and with a bit of a squeal and swerve I narrowly avoided it. It felt very solid and handeled beautifully.

With a quick prayer I and a lot of adrenalin I was on my way without a scratch. The baby didn't even wake up in the back seat.

My wife was driving my daughter some where and they were at or close to the speed limit on a road with two lanes in each direction when a guy in a van comes across from her right side right in front of her out of nowhere. She hit the brakes hard and turned to the right to miss him as he passed (no other cars around) and said they missed by less than 12 inches. She came to a stop and looked over and a cop looked at her, saw she and our daughter were ok and then he went after the guy with all lights and sirens going. One of those times when you usually say where is a cop when you need him but this time he saw the entire thing.I hope that guy gets nailed for a lot of $$.
My wife said if the brakes weren't so good she would have hit him for sure.
This was about two week ago.

I have had a few close calls where the hand of God brakes saved the day. The worst was on I95 a couple years ago. Because of an accident traffic went from 70-0 instantly. I nailed the brakes for all they were worth and came to a stop 10ft behind the SAAB in front of me, who did the same. Late model SAAB's have good brakes. The late model Accord that was behind me ended up in the break down lane just about even with me. Accords have crappy brakes...

The later W126's at least need wider tires to fully use the braking power. The little stock 205's just lose traction and trip the ABS. Put some meat on the wheels for better results.

coming home on a dark interstate a raccoon ran out into the lane, I slammed on the brakes and swerved around the critter. My TD handled so beautifully, I was never so proud.

I think went 50 to 0 in about 40 feet one time,I was speeding up to catch a green light at an intersection to turn left ,then remember I needed to go staight to run another erand first. The light was red and a car was turning across the intersection ,I loaded up those brakes as fast as my legs could pound them .No smoke ,just a high g stop .The Cop across the intersection was not impressed on my skills though ,I had that ,I now feel like a dumbass in front of everyone vibe.84 190d 2.2.

Same here!

I've had to use my brakes a few times...... Once in particular, I was traveling a back country road. There was a little Amish girl riding a bicycle (probably 6 or 7 yr old) and I just pulled over kinda easy like to pass her; got over in the oposing lane to give her lots of room. I had been cruisin' about 60, but let off as I came up and pulled out. Just then, and old couple in a Lincold deside to do a rolling stop at the dirt road that I (and the little girl) are about 25 feet from. I slammed the brakes and pulled back into my lane. Left some nice little spotted patches on the road! And that's with Goodyear TriplTreds!!!

The funny part is the couple in the Lincoln gave me a dirty look, and for all the commotion and moaning tires behind her; the little girl didn't even look back or act alarmed....

Was sure glad for those brakes then.

This spring, I was traveling a different back road and a guy was driving an old farmall with a trailer. turned out he was going to get wood from a fencerow that had been cut down. I pulled over easy-like to pass him, and as I came up almost even to him, he swings to the left to turn into the field! I layed the wheel over and hit the brakes with all that was in me. They promply locked up upon leaving the pavement, so I just turned the front wheels completely sideways, which caused em to plow through the soft dirt in the field I had landed in after rumbling throught he ditch.. I figured I'd probably ripped my exhaust loose and gotten royally stuck. the guy on the tractor jumped off and came running up to my car all apologetic, his eyes as big as saucers. "That's some of the best driving I've ever seen!" he said! I brushed it off, told him I was fine, put the car in gear, and drove out of the field and onto the road. Checked to be sure everything was still attached underneath, and proceeded to leave.....

I only stop for kids, pets, and animals that would damage my car. I wouldn't even lift the throttle for a raccoon...
