Hi guys, Went to the dealer to buy new sway bar bushings and they said my vin doesn't exist, how can this be? The vin on the plate in front of the radiator is the same as the one on the firewall!!

MB Russian VIN decoder comes up with this:

Datacard for VIN WDB1241201A035139 is not found
1) VIN was misspelled in the request form;
2) VIN was erroneously read from vehicle body or documents;
3) VIN is not of an original vehicle and was forged by criminals;
4) The vehicle was produced in late 2005 or 2006, and is not included yet in our database

Being a 124, we can eliminate #4. I copy/pasted from your post, so we can eliminate #1. I'd hope you have double-checked on #2. Hopefully, then, it's not the case of #3.

The one on the firewall is the only one visible to the authorities, so if I were a criminal that's the one I would forge.

Cross-check it with the one on the manufacturing plate (driver's door pillar, should say "Daimler-Benz AG Stuttgart" at the top), there is usually one on the trunk lid behind the license plate as well.

Arrow First....you are located in Portugal...!!

I note that you are in Portugal, so most of the folks here will only have access to MBUSA information.....

There is a thread here someplace relating to a car that had a similar problem....it turned out that it was from South Africa, and was shipped there in parts and assembled there.......

Your car is way too new to have been in Portuguese East Africa (Mozambique).....I was there several times before and after the Portuguese left, and the Portuguese took everything of value with them, including the coins......

I would write a letter to Daimler Benz, Stuttgart and ask them......

You might include a pencil rubbing of the VIN as it appears on one of the number plates of the car. This would help eliminate their concern of error in VIN transcription.

I think you're looking at the body (chassis) code. (Model Id. No.)

BODY NUMBER AND PAINT CODE: This plate is located on the radiator support frame and contains the paint code.

VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER (VIN): The VIN number is located on the left side windshield and on the left front door post.

ENGINE NUMBER: This is stamped into the engine block on the right side of the engine looking into the engine compartment below the cylinder head. There is also a plate fastened to the block with the engine model and complete engine serial number.

BTW the W124 200D was never available in NA. It's a Euro model only.

I don't think Euros have the a-pillar VIN tag.

140s have the VIN stamped in the front passenger seat crossmember under a flap of carpet. Maybe 124s have this as well?
