Pictures of the 79-300CD and donor

I have put a few pictures of my new 300cd and I have included some of the car with my donor engine (an 80-300D with a bad tranny).

I know this might sound stupid, but is there any way that the 80-300D is a turbo? The air intake of the motor looks like the turbo set up in my 84-300D. The 80-300D air intake is totally different from the 79-300CD (which is very obviously not a turbo).

So, the pictures are not that good, but more will be coming as I change the motor from the 80 to the 79.

Thanks, Don

If that air cleaner picture you posted is on the engine in question it IS a turbo engine.

That donor car looks nice...seems a shame to part it out.

if it does get parted can I have the hubcaps?

Well, that is what I thought, but the PO said that it definitely was not a turbo so I was not going to argue with him. But that brings up the switching of motors and what I will have to move on the 79.

Any advice will be appreciated!

I have posted a photo of the current motor of the 79-300CD and more will be coming this weekend.

The donor is OK, but has some rust. I am keeping the hubcaps. However, I will list anything I don't keep.

that looks to be a euro... except for the bumpers... hmmm notice the vac discharge and crankcase lines going to the turbo U tube, perhaps it's from a SD 116? do you have a better picture of the engine? there is no EGR stuff, on the intake. I would like to see the oil filter can. before you part out that car, get some more info on it. do a russian web vin lookup. it may be worth something for it's oddity...

the hubbies are off of a different car. the paint is the wrong color. or is that just in the pic? they look pastel blue, and the car looks dark silver. I want more pics and info on that D!

OK, I will put a few more pictures of the 80-D when I get home today. I figured the hubcaps were not original, but I am going to paint them for the CD.

The 80-D looks OK at a distance, but has been opened at the steering column, etc..

But, is it a turbo, then for sure?

Will it go in the 79 body?

Thanks, Don

absolutely positively a turbo. you can see the turbo in the picture! it is a old motor, due to the vac pump exhaust tube and such, so it should drop right into your CD. BUT I WANT PICS FIRST!@! that, if it is original engine to that car has to be a gray market import, or a VERY special order car.

Cool... I will send a bunch more pictures this evening. Excuse my ignorance, but what is a "russian web vin lookup"? I tried several vin lookups but they won't work with the short vin from the 80-D.

Thanks again.

there were no grey market imports of turbo cars- they were only built for the US market. That has to be a put together car- looks like an early W116 OM617 engine with that aircleaner setup.

OK...I found the russian web vin lookup. I will have to get the first 4 numbers from the car, I guess, this afternoon.

Tell me about the W116 OM617 engine... what years were they made?

In May 1978 the model 300SD was introduced to the USA and Canadian markets. The new S-Class model - for the first time in the history of this vehicle category - was driven by a diesel engine. The 3.0 L 5 cylinder, which had proven so well in the types 240D 3.0 and 300D, was fitted with a turbocharger. The development of this unusual S-Class variant had been started with the goal to fulfil the lower consumption figures introduced by the US-government.
1980 was the last year in the 116 bodystyle.

I just ran the vin number of the supposedly 1980 300D and the vin came back as a 1976 MB gasser...but that cannot be. The dash and everything is diesel...hmmm.

I will try several other vin places.
