The handpump is not on the 87 engine that is a 603 engine with no primer pump. But it still has a lift pump. It's on the injection pump.

So there is not one on the fuel tank? I thought I remembered a buzzing sound from back there when i glowed the plugs.... hmm oh well. Thanks

I am not getting fuel to the IP. If I hook an electric pump to it and get the gravity goin it runs fine. But if I let the nose of the car get higher than the fuel tank it starves itself out of fuel. I have to hook up the pump again.

You might have a fuel tank venting problem. Does it run better with the fuel filler cap off?

There is an electric vacuum pump in the trunk near the spare tire.

The lift pump is on the driver's side of the IP, mechanically operated.
Sounds like you have an air leak into the fuel lines around the IP. Happens all the time on 606 motors. The most common leak on the 606 is at the prefilter O-ring, does the 603 have a similar prefilter? Is your main filter on tight enough?

What's happening is that there is air being allowed into the suction side of the fuel system. Fuel then drains back to the level in the tank. By using the electric pump, you are pulling the fuel back up to the level of the mechanical pump, which can then easily supply it to the IP.
