B2 piston burst out of the transmission?!

Left the apartment today to get my PSP replaced and i drove 300 yards to the stoplight and when the light went green I pressed the accelerator and I had NOTHING but a free revving motor in all gear positions. I flipped on the hazards and pushed the car to the side of the road where there fortunately was parking. There was trans fluid gushing out of the car and it wasn't until it got towed to the shop that the B2 piston broke out of the transmission but it fragmented the case too. Ugh. What a day!

Anyone else experience such a problem?

That just had to be either a lucky fluke, severe overpressurization somehow, or casting flaw that just finally decided to let go...

I guess so. We're going to pull it in a few hours and take a look at it. Will report back with the results.

Just guessing

Yes, just guessing at which car it was. It would be nice to know. And if we don't get to know, I guess we will just have to live with it.

Somebody's B2 kept popping loose not too long ago. You might look for their thread. I don't believe it hand grenaded the casting, though....

And that would be mine....

I never did figure out what caused it either, I think the best guess was intermittent piece of crap in the valve body. Sucks about the case breaking during the B2's bid for freedom. Was the B2 piston itself actually broken?

Ahh, my bad, I forgot to mention that it was the 82' 300TD wagon which isn't listed.

It was a long day. My indie's shop that shares a wall with another building caught on fire a few days ago. It took 150 firefighters, police, and other law enforcement to take care of it...and today it flared up again 4 days later!

The news even has a helicopter video of the fire. The news chopper reporter made a crack about the car in the shop when he was evacuating. The car was non running so what could you do?

So here are the pictures.

I should've mentioned earlier BTW, if you decide to go for rebuilding yours and want a case, give me a holler, I'm up in norcal (by Redding) but I have a dead auto trans from an 82 240 that I'm rebuilding (and converting to manual) so I won't need the trans, I'm only interested in keeping the guts in it to hopefully repair the 4th gear slipping issue in my 80's auto trans. Let me know what the case is worth to you if interested. It is a 722.117 trans.

EDIT: I just saw the post you sent while I was writing mine, don't know if the 300 wagon trannies use the same case or not, but the offer's there if you find out it will work.

The 240D has a different bellhousing since it's not as beefed up as the 300D transmissions isn't it?
