newbie with transmission problems trying to get my 300 sd on the road

hello all. I have asked a few questons to date and still dont have many of them answered. my most pressing question deals with the transmission and related parts. I seem not to get the full range of shifts out of the transmission. I found that I broke the cable on the valve cover, and had issues getting the electric plug put back on on the drivers side of the transmission. I think there are three plugs on the transmisson one is bolted on, (electric speedo?) one has a wierd twisty white thing and has about 4-5 prongs on it (neutral safty switch?) and one just slips into the back tail housing of trans. What do the last two items do? And I found a switch under the floor mat under the fuel pedel what is that for?

as stated before the trans will shift hard from1-2 then wont shift unless I drop the selector into neutral then back into drive then it seems to shift up once. Could the combo of the broken cable and possible vac leak present itself as this?
