300 td no start, after fuel filter change.
Hello! new member here!
I just bought my 1984 300 DT. i changed the primary and secondary fuel filter, now the car wont start. i tried the hand pump on the injector but all that does is spray fuel everywhere. the spin on filter is full the secondary looks 3/4 full. Here is a shot of the primary filter and pump. The pump sprays fuel everywhere. Could this be the issue? Do i need to buy a whole assembly or can i just buy the pump from ***************. Thank you |

Did you fill the spin-on with diesel? (or motor oil/diesel purge/ATF)

Yes, you need a new primer pump. This one is not pumping, and it may be leaking.
For now, you can just crank it until you get the air out, because there isn't much you can do with the primer pump out.

Yeah, I would replace that primer, they wear out and leak. If bad enough could introduce air, I guess. I have replaced mine with the black ones, no need to unlock and pump, just pump. If you will be using bio fuel, stay with the old style you have now, will become a routine replacement part.

i loosened the sec. filter and it was overflowing with fuel (i think) so i disregarded that as being the cause. but to be honest i only filled it half initially.
Thanks for the quick responses |

With the air filter lid off, spray WD 40 into the intake while your friend cranks the engine over. Should fire right up then die, do it again! should start, run rough then smooth out. Less strain on the battery and starter that way.

If your hand pump is spraying fuel everywhere, then air is most likely getting in the lines. Your clear fuel lines look old but can you see bubbles in them? I would wait on the WD-40, replace the hand pump, make sure the spin on is full, pump it a bunch, crack a return line, turn it over, make sure you get some fuel out the injector line, tigthen it up and you should be good to go.
I had to replace the hand pump recently and was very surprised at how much air I had to get out of the system. Good luck

i will try all of the above. But, now i have taken the valve cover off to adjust the valves and realized that i have no spare gasket. I have ordered a new one, so ill have to wait another week before attempting the restart...
Thank you |

I hope you ordered a primer pump also, sounds like you need one.

Old gasket can be reused, if not brittle. If you have the opportunity, delay until a new gasket arrives.
