Anyone ever tried Straight Gas in a Diesel
 

I've always wondered what would happen in the even someone put 100% Gasoline in a Diesel engine. I'd imagine it'd still run. Just wondering if anyone's done it. Not that it'd be something I'd try of course. Just one of those thoughts I've always wondered about.

It would work for like a minute then promptly destroy something or just not run anymore

What kind of damage would happen? Also, has anyone tried it??

It would blow holes in critical parts.

I've thought about it... Not too hard or long though.

I know what happens when you put diesel in a gasser (don't ask lol). Lots of black smoke and a nice bill for a new Caddy V8 :dizzy2:

I've seen a diesel car that had gas put in it. It wasn't running but wasn't ruined. It was in an early Rabbit diesel back around 1983 when I worked in a shop. We drained the tank, purged the fuel lines, refilled it with diesel and it was running normally after that.

When I went to the dealership to get a balljoint pressed into a spare spindle so I could make the swap I overheard one of the techs tell the service administrator that a customer put gasoline in the loaner E320 CDI Blutec and it wont start (after it ran like complete crap for a minute)..

I busted out laughing and said what a frign idiot (the guy that did it was standing in the room)... How could you not know, the filler cap says diesel, the trunk badge is for diesel, the spedo probably says diesel... this guy gets the retard of the year award.. as well as a $10k+ bill for a new E320CDI Bluetec engine


the other funny thing was the service admin asked me how I drove my car here. (I carried the spindle through the service desk area to his desk).. I said.. skillz and he laughed... he must have had one of those moments of complete stupidity

Diesel burns slowly when it auto ignites, gasoline basically explodes.

It's the easy way to blow an injector out of the head if you try to run it hard.

Lets do it.. I want to see splosions

Several years ago my '85 wagon had been down for awhile, maybe 3 or 4 weeks, and i had been driving my wife's toyota gasser while it was down. the first day i put the wagon back on the road i pulled up to the pump (the kind where the diesel and gas are side by side). somehow i had a brain freeze (i remember the diesel handle wasn't green but was black just like the gas handle) and proceeded to FILL IT with gasoline. i proceeded to drive it home (around 2 miles). about half way home, probably about the time it took for all the straight diesel to flush through the system, i felt someting strange. by the time i was 3/4 way home i knew something was very wrong as the car was shaking rather violently and as i pulled onto my street i realized what i had done. Luckily i waqs able to drain the tank, bleed the system and refill it with diesel. no other problems after that. a few weeks later i realized the engine was running better than it ever had. i spoke to a mechanic about this and he told me, although it was not his recommended way, i had cleaned the motor thoroughly by putting the gas in a running a little through the system. please no one go out and do this based on my story as i would not want to be responsible in any way for anything that went wrong. the way i look at it i just got really lucky

I haven't tried it but I don't think it'd blow anything out of the engine. Diesels are built much sturdier than Gas engines to handle the compression. Gas engines can can handle the explosion without shooting parts through the hood. Diesel definitely burns slower than gas and is not as flamable. It has a higher BTU so that means it has more energy and more heat in the same quantity if you compared the two. But I really wonder would it really ruin the engine if you filled the tank full of gas. I'm sure the performance wouldn't be as good but I don't think it'd ruin the engine. I really don't.

When I was in high school I had a friend who's dad had a 76 diesel MB that ran excellent with like 5 or 600k on it. It was a car you could flintstones pedal if it ever had a problem (lots of holes in the floor). The rear end finally gave way and he junked it but it ran 100% perfect (he was a diesel mechanic for the city and worked on Macks all day long). Maybe he'll let me borrow his old 220d for a little science experiment:)
