617 952 and the 617 950

What are the differences between the 617 950 (from the 78-80 300sd w116) and the 617 952 (the various 300d turbos)...other than the chasis applications?

I know both are turbos and 5 cylinder and that taps my knowledge of the differences!

Thanks, Don

The early OM617.950 did not have an EGR and the air cleaner is slightly different. It was 110HP until 1980. It did not have a hardened cam until 1980. The .950s have a slightly longer crankshaft pulley and the power steering pump pulley sticks out more. My 1980 does not have a rack damper pin, although I think mine may be unique. The upper oil pan is smooth on the .950 and ribbed to be stiffer on the .951 and 2

Anything else anyone can add?

impressive...
I think it has the older vacuum pump. and it's associated external vent tube that goes to the U tube on the air filter element and I don't think it has an oil seperator in the air filter. if the motor has significant blowby, you will coat the turbo in oil in VERY short order.

No, I think they may have all had oil separators. Yes, the early ones did have the diaphagm pump. My '80 has a piston pump and had an EGR valve, but mine was a California version so the 49 state version may not have ever had the EGR.

Reviving an old thread here.

There is a 1979 116 in a junkyard near me that has a 617.950. The car shows 278K miles on the odometer. I don't have the room in my garage to take the whole engine but I want to pull some parts before it gets crushed. I'm wondering if the following items are compatible across the 617 models:

Injection pump
Fuel injectors
Turbo (it's a Garrett)
Intake manifold (has EGR)
Exhaust manifold

I don't really want to pull things that are W116 specific because I don't have one. I'm particularly interested in the injection pump because the ALDA and VCV both still have their protective caps so I know they haven't been messed with. Anything else that would be good to salvage? Thanks!

Cheers
Dankly
