Big Thanks from a noob
I am brand new to the world of diesels. I bought my first on Memorial Day..$1600 for a 1983 300D 199k. I found this site about 2 hours after I got home and have spent approx 2 hours a day reading posts concerning problem that I was encountering. You guys are GREAT! The car had many of the "classic" ills, didn't turn off, HARD shifting, HARD brakes, oh did I mention the HARD shifting? It was slow as dirt and sounded like a tank..maybe a T-34. Today, all the planets lined up, everything I read on this site that I have been cramming into my 12oz skull made sense. In one fell swoop I fixed the shut off problem.....sort of(more on that later) disconnected the EGR, adjusted the ALDA, the Bowden cable, did a purge (2 cans) and changed the old primer pump that was leaking fuel as fast as I could put it in ( 8 hours total)plus a proper Italian tune up. WOW!!!!!!! I almost cried. The car is nothing like the one I purchased. The damn thing is actually fast, go figure. The shifting is firm, no more neck snapping. No more "CLUNK" when coming to a stop. I can pull into traffic when I can actually SEE cars on the same road without the fear of possible death or injury. I received outstanding advice on this site and used it and it worked as advertised. THANKS!

Welcome to the forum.
That's fantastic news. Kudos to you for actually searching and finding the info that you need to fix the vehicle. Many new members just post away.......... A tidbit for assisting you: Don't bother with the "search" function on this site. It cannot search more than individual words. As an example, it cannot search "EGR valve". It can search "EGR" and it can search "valve" but not a phrase. Use google for all searches and put "mercedesshop.com" as the domain name. You'll get to your desired end much faster. |

Thanks Brian! The search engine here is pretty tricky and certainly does force a person to skim ALOT of material to find what he needs. But I must say I found as much useful info "by accident" as I did otherwise. And besides, for a guy that knows zip about MBZ diesels....me, ANY good info I read makes me smarter than I was before I read it.
