MB 300D Auto tranny and Spedo cable

Dear Sirs,
I am new at this forum type of thing and new with my 84 300D automatic.
You seem to know about tranys so here goes.
My trany takes about 3-4 secs for the clutches to grab when changing form reverse to first and then when it does shift it seems to grab hard when taking it easy and going slowly but then when putting medal to the pedal or all out it seem to shift smother/not grabing as hard when it does shift. Does this sound like normal functioning or might I be able to do something besides check the tranny fluid level? If I change out the filter and fluid ( Dextron 3 ) what is the best non expensive fluid that I could get like say at O'Reilly to put in there and are the FelPro tranny filters adequate for that Mercedes Benz? Also my speddometer needle flikers excessivly and so was thinking of pulling out the inner spedo cable to clean and grease it but is this possible? I tried from the top behind the intrument cluster and it didn't seem like it could be pulled out from there. Also my tackometer does not work at all and I checked my signal from the tranny there at the firewall and I am getting like 2-3 volts AC and up as I reve up the eng, so probably this means it is my intrument gauge that is at fault. Any tips and advice will be appreciated! Thanks
Steve
