1995 E300 D New Owner

I have just purchased a used 1995 300D in excelent shape with 165000 miles from the second owner who had it over 10 years. I was lurking on this forum for a few months before purchasing and had my mind set on a 1987 300D but this deal was too good to pass up, at least I think so. Body perfect except for one small bubble of rust under the paint on the drivers door where the body clading and the steel meet. Engine is well mantained, new glow plugs 3 years ago, new belt tentioner and pulley. Car seems to run very strong for a non turbo, infact I think it was faster than most of the 87's I drove. The previous owner was very good about using only MB parts and synthetic oil. $8800, what do you thinnk?

Never having a diesel before what should I do next, anything other than basic filter and oil changes. I intend to use it for my 80 mile commute, my Ford Contour is about dead after 150,000 miles.

I think I'd like to know more about the PPI and service records Seriously, that will decide what you do next.

Let me know what you think as it wears on you. A 2.5 or E300 are the top contenders to replace the SD.

Sounds good to me. Mine just turned 188,000 today. Look under the hood and report back. Note condition of wiring harness, fuel pipes, leaks, etc.

I bought my '98 under similar circumstances a couple months ago. It now has over 176k on it, and it's been great. I can't tell you how much enjoyment I get out of having this old thing in the garage. But to give you an indicator, I sold my BMW M5 yesterday and sent it away on a trailer.

Cheers, John

Hey

Hey Dukegrad,
Don't refer to them as "old things." They can hear you and are sensitive. Instead of old, use classic, or vintage.

I think about 30% of the diesel forum drives cars that are older than their owners....

My 95 does not like the pump diesel fuel at all. It was pinging until I conditioned the fuel with some cetane boost and Howe's. IP timing was spot on ( checked by MBz dealer). Had them flush the brake fluid, which looked a wee bit dark to me in the reservoir.

BTW, my 95 loves biofuel. No preignition. more pwoer than conditioned fuel.
