4 speed Manual tied to a 5cyl TD, Possible?

Ive got a line on a 81 300d 4 speed manual. Great shape, low miles but its got engine issues. Knocks that are not normal for a diesel and lots of blowby. So rather than take it out and fix it, I want to change it. Has anyone ever put a 5cyl TD in a manual 5cyl D car? Can the tranny handle added torque? Would turbo spool and de-spool based on RPM change hurt the engine? The manual has got to be able to squeeze a few more MPG out of the diesel and I just like being able to shift my own gears..

Any ideas?

Jake

And there's a girl, in this harbor town
And she works, laying whiskey down
They say "Brandy, fetch another round"
She serves them whiskey and wine

Here comes the chorus..... everybody...

The sailors say "Brandy, you're a fine girl
What a good wife you would be
Yeah your eyes could steal a sailor
From the sea."

Welcome Jake.

Now, do a search and clear off about a day to read all the info. You can't imagine how much info on that is already here.

Check back with more specific questions after your eyes are tired.

Uh, did I mention, Welcome!

Oh, and while I'm being so welcoming (which I actually mean), what is up with all the sold "items" in you sig?

Deleted becauz there was a thinly-veiled thread of banishment over on OD.

Hi all...I'm now back from the land of many, many diesels, fast trains, slow boats and wine that's cheaper than water. And, if anyone ever tells you a Mercedes can't tow a trailer you'll know immediately that they've NEVER been to Europe in the summer.

Wow... quick replies.

I did look through the forum. I apparently wasn't using the proper search criteria.... I followed the link I was sent and got more than I can read here at work and feel good about my myself, but im gonna try.

Everything ive read so far says it can be done.... but I had talked to a Mercedes mechanic the other day who brought up longevitie issues with the motor. He says the constant rev up and down might cause a problem. He couldn't cite an occurance, it was just his feeling.

I ran a dodge 6speed diesel 140k in city traffic before I sold it. Didn't have any problems. Just follow normal turbo cool down procedures and you're ok. I didn't know if the 5cyl Mercedes TD is a dramatically different beast or not.

Ran that dodge its last 40k miles on converted chicken fat that I bought here in Marietta. Engine ran better at over 100k miles than it did at 50k. Looking forward being able to do that again.

Thanks for the replies and pointing me in the right direction.

Jake

P.S. Ill go through all search options before posting next time... rookie mistake

He's uninformed. I've put a lot of miles on mine (40k+ miles with the manual 4-speed and now, a 5-speed that's been in since just after the first of the year) and it runs better than ever. IMHO, the 5-cyl turbo with a 5-speed Getrag manual is quite possibly the best engine/transmission combo ever contrived. I routinely get 26+ mpg (highway) in mine regardless of how I drive it.

It's a diesel and that's about the end of it. A turbo 617 Benz only makes about 95-100hp and 150something ft/lbs of torque.

actually about 122 and 170 iirc.

but the point is that durability should not be an issue.

That conversion has been done many times. I have personally had mine for almost two years with no drivetrain problems and I know of several others with similar results.

Just remember that you will not have a hotrod with the manual. This tranny was designed in the 70's so it's far from the quickest shifting tranny ever made.
