Removing the Fuel Sender Unit
Hey All - first post here but am always browsing the forums, really appreciate the insights...
My question is regarding removing the fuel sender in an '85 123. I tried the channel lock solution, but there was no way that nut was going to budge. For those of you who were able to remove it, was it this difficult? Any suggestions? I live in a pretty hot area, so i'm thinking that everything sort of started to fuse together (and the fact that it probably hasn't been removed in 22 years doesn't help). Thanks!!! |

Use BIGGER channel locks. If its really too tight for something "adjustable" (cheap) You might have too spring for the proper size wrench or socket, I haven't failed too remove any with channel locks, just got lucky maybe.
Be careful when lifting the unit out as diesel "pees" out of a little hole for a long time

I removed the bulkhead in the trunk so I could get more of a swing to remove it.. could try a pipe wrench if you feel up to it

The set up on my 126 made it difficult to get much leverage with the channel locks. I sacrificed a cheap wood chisel. I tapped the chisel into the top surface of the nut on one side and then hammered it so as to make the nut turn.

1 7/8" wrench
I used a 1 7/8" wrench to remove the sending unit on all 3 of my 123's. Used very little effort to remove the unit, the wrench is 2 ft long Spray some brake cleaner or carb cleaner in the little hole and shake and repeat. The low fuel light finally works on all 3 cars.

Northern tools sells the 46mm socket for less than 10 bucks. If you don't have an adaptor for 3/4'' drive a 1/2'' to 3/4'' adaptor will cost about 5bucks. I thought I would return mine after I used them, but I have needed them a couple of times since then so... I'll keep them in the draw for those times. The right tool sure does make it easier.

Thanks for all the help! With some WD-40 and a little more man power I was able to remove the Fuel Sender.
Thanks again! |
