617 Valve Adjustment Clarity

adjusting valves today and want to make sure i got it correct. water temp below 30*C (86*F) measure between the a top nut and the rocker arm. exhaust set to 0.35mm and intake to 0.10mm.

what happens if the "cold" temo of the engine is above 30*C because we have been having 90*+ days here? the car has been sitting for a couple of weeks so it has not been run.

thanks in advance

no problem, a little heat from ambient is fine. as long as it's not hot from running the motor. sounds like you have a handle on it. except there is no rocker arm... you are measuring between the cam base circle and the adjuster nut.

Measurement is between the cam follower and the lobe (base of it), NOT the NUT.

I've found no problems with measuring the way all the books suggest.

Valve Adjustment

Why would you want to measure between the "cam base circle and the adjuster nut"?

Doh! you are right. there is a "rocker arm" of sorts, it's the cam follower. but you measure to the base circle of the cam, not the lobe. be sure the lobe is pointing away from the follower.

i think i am going for the longest time to adjust the valves record. so far it has taken be 3.5 hours. i am going very slow and making sure things are right.

one question. my feeler gauge does not have a 0.10mm it has a 0.12mm though and that is how i have been setting the intake valves. is that 0.02mm that big of a deal? i figure they are going to tighten up anyhow over time.

*edit*

the PITA is the last two valves. those cam towers are close. i can see how the bent wrenches could help a lot.
