What to do with it?
I have in my garage an 83 617 diesel engine. Block, head ,oil pan and transmission are still together. Everything else has been removed. The engine, according to PO has just under 500,000 miles. Ran good, but was using 1 quart of oil per 1000 miles. Vibration damper took the nose off the crank. PO was a diesel instructor at the Nashville Technical College and knew what he was doing.
But it looks like I will need the transmission for my 84. And here is my question. Do you think it is worthwhile to hold on to that engine block? It is a nasty item to contend with, heavy and prone to rust. I would give it to anyone who would care to come by and pick it up, but remember the crank is totaled. I am going to keep the head and oil pan. So, either I give it away, or I can haul it too the scrap yard for a few coins , or oil it up, wrap it up in plastic and walk around it. Any ideas?

I'd just scrap the thing. They are not very hard to find either as running engines, complete, and even with a whole heck of a lot less miles than that thing has on it. It would make a WONDERFUL BOAT ANCHOR...Offer it to HatterASSguy, he might want it for his boat or something..
As far as the transmission is concerned, I'd have that thing completely rebuilt, before ever putting it in anything, if it has that many miles on it. You can save yourself doing the job thrice, if you have it rebuilt before install..

I've got one in my garage with a supposed ~120k on it. The PO said it came out with the trans as a combo and he just put a new motor in it because of a slight noise.
He also said the motor in the car now had the same noise but that went away after a valve adjustment and a few tanks of power service and a diesel purge. I'm still trying to figure out what to do with mine too...

Scrap.....
The price of Scrap is way up at the moment.....I just hauled a bunch of mixed junk to Jerry Stout's Scrap in Georgetown, WV.....I got about 2x what I got a year ago.....
Personally, I am on the 5 year plan here.....if it don't move in 5 years, scrap it...... SB

I've really got to adopt that plan! I'm getting better, though.
