05 E320 CDI Brake job
Is this something I want to tackle? Has anyone done it? Does anyone know anything about these, the SBD 102 or Mercedes Star Diagnosis tool?

You need to remove the electrical connector from the SBC unit under the hood before starting.
Do not under any circumstances attempt this job without disabling SBC. Read your intructions carefully before starting to be sure you have all required parts. Lots of bolts/pins must be replaced and not reused.

I heard they've gone back to regular hydraulic brakes on the facelifted E-class and the new S-class. Wayne, Kent, how do the electronic brakes on your CDI's compare to the hydraulics on your other cars?

The braking is great and usually feels the same, but at lower speeds, the cars slows itself without touching the pedal. Our car has 52,000 miles on it and I am somewhat concerned that it already needs brake pads.

52K on a set of pads sounds really good. I don't think I got over 24K on a set on any 123 or 124 body 300D's I owned.

I'm not expecting to get much more than 40-45k out of my pads (and possibly even the rotors)...52k on pads is excellent!
