1987 300D Turbo Middle Vents/Climate control Issue?

I just purchased an 87 300D and soon found out that the middle vents don't work in any setting. The vents right in the middle of the dash. The rest of the system seems to work fine.

Other quick questions if you have time to answer them.

Do these cars have pnuematic locks?
Whats the best oil/filters to use for this car?
Best manual to buy?

Thanks William

Common problem. Almost certainly the vacuum actuator in the HVAC box under the dash has failed. Replacement requires pulling the dash. My recall is fuzzy on that particular actuator and whether it can be replaced with the HVAC box in place or not. Behind the glovebox is a gang of 7 vacuum lines. Best recommendation is to test each with a hand vacuum pump (e.g. Mityvac) to determine which work and which do not. From there you can asses the condition of HVAC system.

Yes. Well, vacuum locks really. The locks are operated by a dedicated electric vacuum pump, not the engine vacuum pump. The pump is under the rear seat.

Any good German brand. Hengst comes to mind. Check what's for sale here at Fastlane.

MB used to sell the official shop manuals on CD for ~$125. It was the best, though sometimes difficult to navigate. Not sure it's available any longer. You may want to look on ebay to see what's available.
