Yes I confess. I detached the odometer cable on a Rental Truck from the Company with Orange and White Paint last weekend. It was a challenge, 'o cause the odo is the new kind.
But thats because the previous rental they were very unfair to me.
The previous time they gave me a truck in such terrible condition it wasn't funny and I had to stop and add PS fluid every 15 miles and they wouldnt reimburse me.
Also once they charged my card extra for being 90 minutes late late; but when they called and wanted my truck back 6 hours early to rent it to someone else, which they often do on Busy summer weekends, they give you no break.

I think the Company with Orange and White Paint is dishonest. They give you no credit if they break their end, but they charge you megabucks for small things.They literally make $200,000 off of a $30,000 truck and towards the end of the lifespan, the trucks are very very dangerous.

What goes around comes around...sigh...I try to be as honest as the next person. I honestly state that was more of a Prank and practical joke more than greed. All I save was like $30.00..Anyway, something bad is going to happen to my Karma now...probably sieze an engine..PS the Company with Orange and White Paint is Baskin Robbins truck rental

I think this is universal for that company. The trucks are the most dangerous POS on the road. Even when a news investigator pointed out the safety defects to the rental agent, they did nothing to correct them.

Never rent from this company if you an avoid it. I've found Penske to be the exact opposite........clean trucks, relatively new, good maintenance.

Many years ago I did some thing like that for a warranty repair that would not have been it warranty otherwise.

I hope U-Hell goes out of business, soon. I have a special black spot in my heart just for them because of how they screwed me over. I used to work in one of their primary maintenance centers.

Also, they have not bought any new diesels since 1994 and none of them in the USA are turbo (The only 5 turbo trucks live in Canada). If you need to go through mountains, avoid the diesel models unless you like traveling 25mph.

About the Orange and White. I had some friends that where moving shortly after 9-11. Their Orange and White truck totally stalled out on the SF Bay bridge. The CHP came up and told them that they were a threat to national security, and if they did not move along quickly they would be treated as such. All they could do was say "we called the 1 800 number!". Anyway, it was a whole bunch of hassle that no one needed. I will never rent from them!

Well, I did pretty well with U-Haul, last weekend. I could not get a rental car fast enough to make it out to St.Louis Missouri, from Buchanon, Tn. to pick up my 82 280CE, Euro, and bring it to my little place back in Buchanon Tn. I rented a U-Haul, of which was a 2007 Ford 17 foot box van, with 540 miles on it at pick-up time. For $180.00 rental, the thing came with a 350 mile allowence, on a one way rental. I only needed a quick ride, so I never even opened the back of the thing.

It went well for me, and I've used them for this sort of thing before. If you vehicle is in the shop, or you need a quick ride somewhere, just rent a U-Haul, for the same price, or less, than the rental car, and you're all set...I would definately recommend them, and their services, as they were prompt. available, and very flexible.

^^^Pretty interesting idea, to use one of them as simply a rental vehicle. A few years ago, in San Francisco, their new Chevy Silverado pickups had "$20 a day" painted on them. That would be more than competitive with even the Puddle jumpers for rent from Budget, Avis, Enterprise or Hertz. You'd have to go to the Latin quarter though to pick it up on Valencia (near Mission Street) if I recall.....

I had to rent a Ford ZX2 about then, and that POS cost me $65 a day, rented from the Union Square area of SF. Wish I had thought of that then.

From the local franchise, I have had only good luck. I have rented only trailers, both the over night covered kind and the car hauling type. Their equipment is always first rate. (actually, I am always a little surprised at this).

Sorry some folks have had a different experience.

I think it must be the attitude of the local franchise holder expecially with the case of carrowmeow. Their attitude is just poor business.

We rented a huuge U-Haul once (biggest one they offer), with a big diesel engine and a huge stick shift. Do they have any mechanics at all? Whenever you'd turn the wheel I could hear loud groaning and popping noises in the front end. The brake lights weren't all working. It wouldn't start a couple of times, had to let it cool down.

What a scary thing that was to drive!

I think that some of the problem with that particular truck and trailer rental company lies with the individual franchise holder......when I returned here to WV, I used one of their largest trucks and a vehicle trailer to pull my F-150 (fully loaded with cargo, of course)......Ed, the owner of the Hardware Store/Rental Agency allowed me to choose which vehicle that I wanted to use before he typed up the contract....he also steered me away from a couple of vehicles that were in lousy repair, in his opinion, and unsuitable for interstate travel....

Also of note: If you want to rent a trailer to bring home your latest prized MB find....."U Haul" will not rent a trailer to pull a W123 behind an F-150....because they claim that the car is heavier than the tow vehicle......my F-150 has a factory trailering package.....and has towed many a boat to the launch.....when I tried to do this rental, I told the rental agent..."no problem, I'll just put a couple of scoops of sand in the bed"....he said no....but he did tell me that I could come back later and tell him that I wanted to pull a different "lighter" model of car.....this I did not do.....try going to the U-Haul website and type in the vehicles in my sig.....it keeps coming up that you need to rent a truck from them......

I totally agree which is why I am making my confession

I just read that article about U-Haul trailers......and now I understand what U-Haul is doing with their web site's calculator.....I have towed a lot of different trailers, boats mostly.....and that is why when I was informed about the weight, I told them that I could put a "couple of scoops" of sand in the bed of the tow vehicle......and why I declined to rent from them when the agent suggested that I come back later and tell them that I would be towing a different (lighter) vehicle....

The article poses some interesting thought regarding U-Haul's safety inspections....and the maintenance of their equipment.....

The reason why I wanted to rent a trailer in the first place is.....I purchased my present 300D on e-Bay, about 200 miles from me...I thought that I would just use Public Transportation "The Bus" to get to my new car's location....I had not ridden on a bus in 30 or 40 years, and was unaware that they do not service Central WV any longer.....I don't know about the rest of the USA, but there is no form of Inter-city public transportation available these days.....not a problem for me, but it makes me wonder where this country is headed......years ago, the Greyhound used to travel along US 50, and stop at most small towns.......no wonder our dependence upon petroleum is forever on the increase.....I wound up having to have a friend drive me over there to get my "new' Benz and then drove the 300D back here....and of course my F-150 had to return here as well, thus requiring an extra 400 miles of highway driving...
