proper Idle rpm for 85 300d ?

Just got my tachometer working...
Since I played with my Idle control Knob,
I started the car and it idle'd at 1000 (not10000) oops
turned the knob a couple notches and
it is now idleing at around 850rpm...

still alot faster idle than previous.

Whats a good # ?
Or is it to taste...

900 should be stock... 10,000? um boom?

Bstef 06-26-2007 03:28 PM

uh, edited. 1000, not 10000.
:)

thanks

no problemo!
where did you have to dig to fix the tach?
my 85 D tach is defunkt and the 85 TD is a euro, so no tach from the factory... I think.

"where did you have to dig to fix the tach"

The fuse behind the right air vent.
The uh... uh... This thing...
overload protection relay

Red 10A fuse was blown since 2 previous owners ago.

I removed my air vent to get to it easier. seems to have been a bad idea, I cannot get the vent back on correctly... part of the plastic has snapped from the fastening ring.

I had a few people tell me that the instrument panel must have been replaced from a newer model and I shouldent have a tach. Those few people were incorrect.

Idle control "knob"? Your not talking about the one on the dash are you? Are you referring to the idle stop on the IP?

TheDon 06-26-2007 04:57 PM

probably on the IP..

I thought the correct idle was 750-800?

It's supposed to be 700 - 800 according to the manual. Mine's currently set at about 600.

I need new engine mounts, shocks, and a RDP.... at 750 it shakes the whole car..

This is what im using to alter my idle rpms.
In this picture the top part of the switch/dial is off...

The dial is a trimming plug for idle control. Turning the knob should raise or lower idle in 25 or 50 rpm increments.

Dunno about anyone elses model. It works on mine... :)

It's around 850-900 now and is nice, but could go much lower.

And so it shall...

Chicago flooded today- One hour of rain, and the 3 blocks surrounding me all have a foot+ of water in the basements. I had to move my 300D before water got in thru the bottom of the doors. Spent the day swimming in the street uncloging storm drains.

Dear Mayor, Please open the extra storm drains to the lake you farking Idiot. There are 22 basement apartments on my block alone. Please send water wings.

That's interesting, where is that knob located.

Bstef 06-26-2007 08:10 PM

Passenger side footwell- on right side, in front of passenger door.
there's a little (not really little) plastic door. It's in there...

Agreed.

The SD is at 725. It's a good speed and doesn't tend to tow you at stoplights.

I'd think that 600 would give you a case of the "shakes". That's very slow for a five cylinder.

Very interesting. My tach died some time ago and no amount of tach amps have fixed it. My alternator light does not come on either.

I'll have to give that a try.
