Source of mystery smoke?
Hey guys, got a good one for you.
My mechanic friend has semi-retired, and now picks up and delivers cars he is going to work on. He had a customer he's not seen in a while ask him to take a look at the AC on an 87 300TD. While his wife was following him back to return the car, he made a couple of sharp 90 degree turns (section line turns, if you live out in the sticks) at the church just down the road. When he accelerated out of the turn, the TD produced a huge cloud of black smoke, so bad his wife had to stop, she couldn't see the road. He wasn't on it hard, just trying to speed up. Ditto on the next one a couple hundred feet further on, but no smoke any other time. From a dead stop, no smoke, none under firm acceleration in a straight line, only when turning hard. My first thought was the EGR going wide open under acceleration (or sticking open due to side force for some reason) since this exactly describes the smoke my old Volvo produced when the EGR stuck on it. However, that was EVERY time you stepped down hard, not just on turns. Any other ideas? Hans isn't too hot on working on it, too much wrong with it (and the actual complaint was AC, which he isn't gonna do anyway, too much work). He is curious though. Peter

Hmmmm.....very interesting.....
I was wondering if there were any unusual noises when he made those turns.....if all else is the same i.e. no unusual noises, then I would look into the air cleaner, perhaps a bit of trash is in there that restricts air flow during the turns......anyhow, it sounds like an air flow problem to me, but it also sounds like a very large and thick cloud of black smoke.....I am unfamiliar with the newer Benzes....that '87 TD is a bit of an odd duck in the Benz lineup, my '85 300D (Federal) has most of it's pollution control done by vacuum via electrical "switchover" valves ....assuming that it has a similar setup, maybe that car's EGR is opening die to an electrical problem that manifests itself during turning....

Black not blue means carbon...
Could the turning have knocked some carbon loose in the exhaust?

I'm still thinking it's the EGR getting activated on acceleration with side force (or following side force).
603's do not pool oil in the intake or turbo housing, and the smoke cloud was large enough to engulf a full sized car behind, this isn't a puff or two, more like a bad condtion MACK under full load! It's possible that there is something floating around in the air filter housing, or possibly the air flow meter is broken (the later might cause the EGR to get switched on). Peter

That black smoke is unburned fuel, not motor oil. Is the ALDA on and adjusted properly? Injectors ok?
