Electrical? problems for 1987 300td

Hello all,

I just bought a 1987 300td. It seems to have a few problems that I think are electrical problems:

1) After not using the car for a long while, the cruise control doesn't work. I drive the car for a while, turn off the engine, and restart the car; then the cruise control works perfectly.

2) The washer fluid idiot light is always on. The car has plenty of washer fluid. Why is it staying on?

3) The left turn signal blinks too quickly. When I use it for the first time the "lights" idiot light turns on and stays on until the car is turned off.

4) The left stereo speakers sometimes crackle in unison when the stereo is off.

5) The stereo stays on when the car is turned off and the key is out of the ignition.

Sometimes the 4th and 5th problem combine so that my speakers crackle all night, which is bad for the speakers or a drain on the battery.

Any advice is totally appreciated. Thank you!

1. Likely the CC brain. Resolder connections or get a rebuilt.

2. You know you have two reserviors, right? One is for the rear window, it's on the RH side in back, near antenna.

3. You have light out. That's why the idiot light comes on. Fast blinking is a dead giveaway.

4. Dunno. Likely a radio problem. What kind of radio is in it?

Jim,

Thank you so much for getting back to me:

1) If its the CC brain, then why does it work sometimes, but not other times?

2) I just checked - there is plenty of fluid in both reservoirs. Is there anything else that might be causing this?

3) Neither bulb is burnt out. I have heard from someone else this can be caused by non-OEM lightbulbs. I will go buy some OEM lightbulbs and see if it works better.

4) & 5). My stereo died completely yesterday, so I think it had just been on its way out.

Marie

1) the cc brain has a reputation of getting "cold soldier jionts" over time (poor connection at the circuit board) that when heated up or having electricity pass through them, they can fail, but can re make contact after either mechanical agitation or electrical disturbance.

2) your washer sensor could be bad (located under the electrical connection at the top of the bottles)

3) I concur with your theory about the wrong bulb being in .

I hope this helps some!

124 300d electric problems

I had some strange elec probs with a 124 300d. I now can't recall all the combination of things -operating the windows would work only once, then the car had to be shut off to operate them again - it was that kind of thing. but turning the car off and then back on was a short term fix.

I finally decided that the ignition switch was the problem - replaced it and the probs went away

Ignition switch is a good thought.

On the W/S washer fluid, un-plug the connector on top of the W/S washer bottles one at a time and see which one is turning on the light.
