I parted out a '82 240D which was built in late '81 I believe... But I did not write down the chassis number... and I am looking get a new release bearing for it before installing it into the daily driver wagon...

The only number I can find on the side appears to be a casting # of 261 2501 10... does this tell me that it is a Before Vin#10-219675? Or am is there another casting # somewhere.

I don't think that number does you any good, but assuming this is the alloy 4-speed, I would feel comfortable about ordering the part for the AFTER number. You have a very late transmission in the series.
