Hi Guys,

The VIN shows it's a W124 300TD.
That probably means it's already been done.

Does your engine bay have what looks like a football sized gray can on the passenger side of the engine?

Yes my car still has that football like trap in the engine. Yes my car is a 1987 300td turbo. I really believe it should be included in the recall. I guess they just don't want to replace it for me. So what else is new with MB. Can anyone help on this problem... I don't want my turbo to get busted.

Its not to big a job to change it, before it causes trouble, try to find a member who is parting a 603 engine, and see if they will sell you that piece.

Why would MBUSA bring up that bit about the Philippines? The VIN clearly shows it as being a USA car.

I take it you've already taken it to your dealer and asked about the recall?

um, perhaps the poster lives in the Philippines?
Hey, op, click the cp link at the top of the page, and update your location and add in the type of car and it's year to your signature.
thanks!

Our laws force MB to recall these cars, if you were located in the US MB would preform the recall. I hate to say it but in this case you are SOL, so have someone weld up a replacement.

Is removing and knocking the guts out a possibility? My memory is that the substrate in the trap-ox is ceramic.

No. That is a good way to guarantee turbo damage.

I agree, I'd rather play it safe and get a small piece of piping to put in it's place.

My final question guys, How wide should the pipe be if I will have someone weld it for me? Also would a stainless pipe do it or should it be cast iron? Please let me know. Thanks for all your inputs.

Yes, the MBUSA organization is only going to deal with Mercedes properly imported into the USA and currently operating in the USA. They don't support Mercedes in other countries.

It is possible that there is some organization in the Phillipines that does the same thing there as MBUSA does for USA owners. MBPHIL or something like that. A local dealer should be able to tell you. But I am not sure the local Mercedes dealers are going to be responsible for a foreign recall campaign.

To answer your most recent question, either a regular or stainless steel pipe should work. Obviously the stainless pipe will last longer.

The other possiblity may be to swap non-trap exhaust components from a junk car located near you to your USA-version car. I guess that would be the exhaust manifold and the header pipe.
