87 300TD engine rattles at low rpm
The car seems to run fine, but driving at low rpm seems to cause an irregular rattling noise from the engine. Any ideas?

Welcome to the forum.
The problem with noises is that they are very difficult to diagnose from simple words on the internet. If you can post a sound clip from the engine, it would provide much greater insight as to the problem. |

Mine used to rattle at idle and slightly above. In my case it was the belt tensioner shock and spring. Might be worth a look.

Brian makes a good point. too many things can rattle under the hood of one of these old cars, but i also agree with cal that a good place to look is the tensioner "shock" or dampner.

Yup, we're just guessing based on very little info, but I would also make sure it's not coming from the vacuum pump.
