radiator question

Dumb question but I am not a mechanic...

(300D 1983) I am taking my car in soon to have all the fluids changed but I notice that the reservoir for the radiator fluid is on the low side. Is it okay to put distilled water in there until I can get it to the mechanic? And I should fill until the max line?

Thanks, Lance

Tap water will be fine for a short period. Otherwise a mixture of tap water and anti-freeze.

distilled water is always best, but if you are going to have all fluids changed (including the radiator coolant) tap water is fine. don't go too long with low coolant, you can damage your water pump, head etc. if you are low, there may be a leak, look for drips or traces of coolant on the motor. especially look under the aluminum upper radiator hose connector on the block, there is a short hose there that is notorious for leaks.

My guess is that you have never sampled Florida tap water!!! It's not like that good mountain water that you have in Colorado.

Fl water sure does not taste good, but it should be fine for coolant top off for a short time.

Ever see what it leaves behind in a glass? Or in a water fountain?

yup.
nobody said it would be ideal, just that it would keep the car from boiling over due to lack of coolant in the motor.
as a matter of fact, I said distilled water is best.
the guy said he was taking it in to get all the fluids changed. jeez!

Alright, alright everyone, many folks have a jug of distilled around. For those that do not, if there is any fluid left in expansion tank, you can run to the store and get some. You'll be fine, if you're bone dry, tap water will work, yet try to avoid. Everyone's undies unbunched now?
