your choice of motor oil for 'ye olde Diesel'

Just curious...

It's about time I changed oil & filter on my 1987 W124 300D Turbo. It has 300k+ miles on it.

Because of the high mileage, I was thinking about getting some heavy duty 15W-40 Castrol and MAHLE filter. What do you think of this? Would it be good enough or is it unnecesarry?

Oh, one more thing!
How often (miles) do you change your oil & filter?

Thanks in advance!

Delo 400 or Delvac MX, can't be beat. Delvac-1 or Delo synthetic for truly extreme conditions.

Rotella 5w40 synthetic and do a full change every 5k. I'm currently using the Bosch filter. I'll probably bump it up to 7.5k miles.

Their dino oil is also highly rated -- I've asked plenty of long time diesel folks and they swear by the regular (even running it in a gasser hot rod!).

But I opted for the longer changes and the ability to start without a block heater down to -4F.

Though when I changed to synthetic (it was 15 degrees!) I did start getting an oil leak. Turned out it was the drain plug -- a new one and a new copper gasket and now nary a drop.

Anyoil that has a diesel rating (CF, CH etc... usually found in gal. jugs) and Mann, Mehle or WIX filters. Anywhere from every 3K to 5K miles, depending on conditions such as city/highway and hot/cold temps.

I use a good filter, either the Wix or the turkish Fram for my 617, I believe that any oil that has the seal for the API aprroval for the latest Diesel certification should be good. at that point I just pick the cheapest one. Sometimes it's Shell Rotella, sometimes it Castrol (RX?).

i gotta wonder (pics)

for the experts, old guys, and accomplished mechanics...have you ever seen a failed MBZ OM motor and said to yourself (and/or the owner of the failed motor) "hey you should have been using xxxxxxxxxx motor oil instead."

does anyone drink their motor oil, new or used? then the choice would really matter, like beer. i choose

Rotella 15W40

and

comments, anyone?
